Job summary

The Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, seeks an experienced AAG/Assistant Solicitor General in the Federalism Division to represent the State of Louisiana in state and federal habeas corpus proceedings. The position will be domiciled in Baton Rouge, LA, with background checks and related verifications required.

Ideal candidate will have a JD, Louisiana Bar admission, and 3–5 years of litigation experience, including habeas work, plus strong oral advocacy and legal-writing

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and admission to the Louisiana Bar (or eligibility).
• 3–5 years of litigation experience.
• Extensive experience handling state and/or federal habeas corpus proceedings.
• Exceptional oral advocacy and strong legal writing skills.
• Ability to manage complex cases and large volumes of records efficiently.
• Strong interpersonal skills for working with prosecutors, law enforcement, and court personnel.
• Prior clerkship preferred (state or federal).

Responsibilities

• Serve as lead counsel for the State in all assigned state and federal habeas corpus proceedings.
• Draft and file answers, motions to dismiss, briefs, and other pleadings in state and federal courts.
• Analyze trial records, appellate decisions, and post-conviction filings to assess claims and develop litigation strategy.
• Ensure compliance with all procedural requirements.
• Represent the State in evidentiary hearings, oral arguments, and status conferences in state and federal courts.
• Coordinate with trial prosecutors, appellate attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and court personnel as needed.
• Track and manage deadlines and case status for multiple complex matters.
• Provide legal advice and recommendations to division leadership on habeas-related issues and emerging legal trends.
• Any additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

The candidate will be an exceptional litigator working in a high-volume, deadline driven environment while successfully defending the validity of criminal convictions in state and federal courts.

Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.

The position will be domiciled in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, East Baton Rouge Parish. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory background check, drug testing, and reference verifications.
