Job summary

Technique is a Michigan-based precision sheet metal and welded assemblies manufacturer serving aerospace, defense, automotive, motorsports, medical, and food processing industries. We are seeking a 2nd Shift Metal Finishing Prep to join our team at the Jackson facility, reporting to the Manufacturing Manager.

You will prepare metal surfaces to the highest quality standards, perform A-class finishing, sanding, defect correction, and prep for coating and shipment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience achieving A-class surface quality, zero defects.
• Proficiency in dry sanding with progressive grits 80–600+.
• Identify and correct surface defects (orange peel, runs, sags, pinholes, scratches, weld splatter).
• Prep bare metal, weld joints, and machined surfaces (degreasing, phosphate, scuff prep).
• Finish weld beads to meet tolerances and protect surfaces during prep.
• Mask critical areas and prepare for multi-stage coating.
• Familiarity with MIL-SPEC coating requirements preferred.
• Operate DA sanders, grinders, polishers with proper speed/pressure.
• Must obtain/maintain forklift license; able to lift 50+ lbs.

Responsibilities

• A-Class Surface Finishing – achieve defect-free, inspection-ready results.
• Automotive Sanding – dry sanding with progressive grits and feathering.
• Defect Identification & Corrective actions for surface quality.
• Metal Substrate Preparation – degrease, phosphate treatment, scuff prep.
• Weld Seam Blending – grind, file, finish weld beads to tolerances.
• Masking & Surface Protection for multi-stage prep operations.
• Follow MIL-SPEC/defense quality standards and documentation.
• Operate and learn laser etch, leak test, and robotic welding equipment.
• Pack and prepare finished goods for shipment.
