Job summary

Northumberland County is seeking a full-time Emergency Dispatcher to respond to 911 calls and coordinate police, fire, ambulance, EMA and other agencies in Northumberland County. You will input caller data into CAD, access maps and resources to locate nearest responders, and provide Emergency Medical Dispatch as needed.

The role requires attention to detail, ability to handle difficult calls, and strict confidentiality. Training and certifications will be maintained throughout employment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Required certifications listed: APOC basic telecommunicator; PEMA Call taker, Police, Fire, EMS and EMA dispatching; CPR; PowerPhone (EMD); CLEAN/NCIC Scope; JNET; NIMS.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency 911 calls; evaluate and determine emergency response; input information into CAD.
  • Enter, update and retrieve information from various computer systems promptly.
  • Provide EMD using current software as required.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, responds to emergency and non‑emergency calls; updates emergency response information to improve response services, dispatch Police, Fire, Ambulance, EMA and other agencies located in Northumberland County.

What You’ll Do
  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency 911 calls; evaluate and determine emergency response; obtain information from caller and input information into computer aided dispatch (CAD) to assist emergency personnel; access help maps, run cards, box alerts and other resources to determine the location of the nearest help.
  • Enter, update and retrieve information from a wide variety of computer systems in a timely manner.
  • Provide EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) as required with the current software used.
  • Coordinate police, fire, ambulance and other emergency requests and provide all information received from the caller as quickly as possible to all emergency responders.
  • Transmit and receive messages between police, fire, ambulance, EMA and other county agencies; monitor dispatched units and, when necessary, serve as a liaison with the caller and record results into CAD system.
  • Access CLEAN/NCIC systems to obtain and verify information from government databases through the CAD system and/or SCOPE.
  • Attend continuing in‑service training and education.
  • Consult with management to gain knowledge of specific work situations requiring changes in policies, procedures, regulations and technologies.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the shift supervisor.

  • Perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with numbers and units of weight, measurement, volume and distance.
  • Apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
  • Use Microsoft Office spreadsheet and word processing software; type at least 25 words per minute.
  • Sit for long periods; use hands and arms to manually handle, reach and operate; occasionally stand and lift or move up to 50 pounds; have close and color vision.
Minimum Training & Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum age 18 years.
