Job description

Job Title: 911 Dispatcher

The Village of Tinley Park, the 20th largest city in Illinois and the 14th largest in the Metropolitan Chicago area, is seeking a mature, responsible, and qualified individual for the role of 911 Dispatcher in the Tinley Park Command Center.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Communicating effectively with the public during emergency situations.
  2. Operating the Village-wide enhanced 911 Emergency Communications System to receive, evaluate, process, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for Police, Fire, and EMS.
  3. Assessing situations quickly and accurately to determine response requirements and priorities.
  4. Providing emergency medical dispatch (EMD) instructions over the phone.
  5. Multi-tasking to manage calls, radio traffic, and walk-in traffic during shifts.
  6. Monitoring police, fire, and EMS radio traffic, transmitting and retrieving information through various law enforcement data networks.
  7. Operating the Telephone Device for Hearing Impaired (TDD).
  8. Relaying information between emergency sites and law enforcement or other groups.
  9. Recording information accurately on forms, logs, and computer screens.
  10. Maintaining awareness of field unit activities via CAD, LEADS/NCIC, and other systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma.
  • 1-3 years of dispatch or related public service/emergency management experience.
  • Knowledge of public safety communication techniques, including telecommunications systems and databases.
  • Knowledge of dispatch codes, industry abbreviations, and terminology used by emergency services.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under stress and in extended periods of high-pressure situations.
  • Must obtain LEADS certification within two weeks of hire.
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and CPR/AED certifications required within six months of hire.

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong work ethic, good judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, paying attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand and use law enforcement language.
  • Punctuality and flexibility to work mandatory overtime and recall duties.
  • Ability to operate 9-1-1 systems, telephones, radios, and CAD systems effectively.

Work Schedule:

The standard schedule is 4 days on, 3 days off, including 2 - 8 hour days and 2 - 12 hour days each week. Currently seeking to fill Afternoon Shift (Wednesday 3:00PM - 11:00PM, Thursday & Friday 3:00PM - 3:00AM, Saturday 3:00PM - 11:00PM). Shift assignments are based on seniority each November and may change based on operational needs. During initial training, candidates must be able to work any shift or day.
