Job summary

The City of Oakland Police Department seeks qualified Police Communications Dispatchers. This continuous recruitment prioritizes applicants who can respond promptly, communicate clearly, and stay calm under pressure.

Training includes a POST-certified dispatcher course with varying shifts, weekends, and overtime during emergencies. Selected candidates undergo background checks, a polygraph, medical exam, and a rigorous screening process.

Qualifications

• Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
• Two years of full-time work experience.
• Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute.
• Bilingual skills may be tested for select positions.

Responsibilities

• Receiving and screening telephone calls and recording data.
• Analyzing calls for priority level.
• Using computer-aided keyboard and data entry equipment or manually recording and relaying information.
• Receiving, transmitting, and recording data.
• Running queries in automated warrant information systems.
• Answering questions from the public.
• Dispatching from a mobile command center, as requested.
