Job Description

Purpose: To plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help the student learn subject matter and skills which contribute to their education and social development.

Supervises: May coordinate and direct activities of teacher assistants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Major Function: Management of Instructional Time – The teacher prepares materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson, starts the class quickly, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Major Function: Management of Student Behavior – The teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine administration, verbal participation, classroom movement, monitors behavior during all instructional activities, and addresses inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining student dignity.
  • Major Function: Instructional Presentation – The teacher reviews prior material, introduces objectives, presents concepts clearly, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks for high success, manages pacing, makes smooth transitions, ensures clarity of assignments, and summarizes key points at lesson end.
  • Major Function: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance – The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates, circulates during class to check performance, employs oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly.
  • Major Function: Instructional Feedback – The teacher provides corrective and encouraging feedback on in‑class, assigned out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and probes after incorrect or no responses to promote growth.
  • Major Function: Facilitating Instruction – The teacher aligns instructional plans with school and system curricular goals, uses diagnostic assessment data to revise objectives, maintains accurate records, and utilizes available resources to support instruction.
  • Major Function: Interacting Within the Education Environment – The teacher treats students fairly, and interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and community.
  • Major Function: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties – The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, follows a professional development plan, and demonstrates growth.
