Job summary

The Young Mens Christian Association Of The Chesapeake in Elkton, MD is seeking a part-time lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions and promote member safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Lifeguards will perform continuous pool surveillance, respond immediately to emergencies, perform equipment checks, keep required records, participate in in-service trainings, and assist with opening/closing duties as needed.

Qualifications

• CPR, First Aid, AED and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
• Current YMCA lifeguard or equivalent.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
• At least 16 years of age.
• Reliable and timely.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately.
• Maintains positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
• Applies safety rules for pool and aquatic areas and maintains required records.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions at all times.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes action.
• Attends staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Lifeguards will maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Lifeguards will create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Lifeguards will be required to participate in in-service trainings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.


2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.


3. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.


4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or State Health Department code.


5. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.


6. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions at all times.


7. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.


8. Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service staff training.


9. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• CPR, First Aid, and AED and Emergency Oxygen certifications along with any other additional trainings required within 30 days of hire.


• Current YMCA lifeguard or equivalent.


• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.


• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.


• At least 16 years of age.


• Reliable and timely.


• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.


• Meet strength and lifting requirements.


• See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
