Job summary

Perkins Family YMCA is seeking a full-time Lifeguard in St. Michaels, MD to maintain safe swimming conditions, monitor the pool deck, and promote a safe, engaging atmosphere in line with YMCA policies.

Responsibilities include surveillance, emergency response, staff training, equipment checks, and accurate record-keeping. Certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen are required.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical/mental readiness.
• Demonstrated lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

• Maintain active surveillance of the pool area.
• Know and execute emergency procedures; document as required.
• Foster positive relationships with members, participants and staff.
• Apply safety rules and maintain accurate pool/health records.
• Perform routine equipment checks and ensure availability of gear.
• Inspect pool for hazards on arrival.
• Conduct chemical testing and take action as needed.
• Lead staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Schedule and train new lifeguards.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Position is a full time, with benefits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the State Health Department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
• Conduct staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Responsible for scheduling and training new lifeguards.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 18.

Physical Demands:

• Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
• Meet strength and lifting requirements.
• See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
