Job summary

The University of Georgia's Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island, GA is seeking a temporary Environmental Educator to lead K-12 students in coastal, life, earth, and marine science outdoors. You will supervise classes, support center operations, and assist with animal care and resident education programs while engaging with youth and adults in dynamic outdoor settings.

The role requires flexibility to work outdoors in heat and unpredictable weather, lift up to 40 pounds, and collaborate with staff

Qualifications

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Teaching qualities: commitment to youth development and lifelong learning.
  • Strong communication, leadership, integrity and relationship-building.
  • Experience teaching a wide variety of subjects to K-12 youth and managing groups.
  • Broad knowledge of outdoor education and willingness to learn content.
  • Customer service and hospitality/food industry experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Experience working with live teaching animals and outdoors in various weather.

Responsibilities

  • 60% – Independently lead, teach, manage K‑12 students and chaperone adults through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting, covering coastal ecology, life science, earth science, and marine science.
  • 25% – General support of overall center operations, including maintenance and upkeep of facilities, operation of a UGA mini‑bus, dining hall support, and projects as needed.
  • 10% – Animal care husbandry and maintenance for residential education reptiles, amphibians, marine invertebrates, coastal fishes, and more.
  • 5% – Lead staff responsibilities to support on‑going reservations and guests.

4‑H Environmental Educator – Burton

Position Summary: This is a temporary Environmental Educator position at Burton 4‑H Center located on Tybee Island, Georgia. The primary responsibility is to independently lead K‑12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting. Class subjects offered include a focus on coastal ecology, life science, earth science, and marine science. Other responsibilities include animal care, lead staff duties, general support of overall center operations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • 60% – Independently lead, teach, manage K‑12 grade students and chaperone adults through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting, covering coastal ecology, life science, earth science, and marine science.
  • 25% – General support of overall center operations, including maintenance and upkeep of facilities, operation of a UGA mini‑bus, dining hall support, and projects as needed.
  • 10% – Animal care husbandry and maintenance for residential education reptiles, amphibians, marine invertebrates, coastal fishes, and more.
  • 5% – Lead staff responsibilities to support on‑going reservations and guests.
Qualifications

  • Work qualities: dynamic personality, well‑developed communication skills, positive attitude, creativity, leadership ability, integrity, willingness to connect and build relationships, and the desire to grow and be challenged.
  • Experience teaching a wide variety of subjects to K‑12 youth and managing groups of adults and students.
  • Broad knowledge of outdoor education and willingness to learn educational content.
  • Effective communication with youth and adults; customer service and hospitality/food industry experience.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team; flexibility and adaptability.
  • Experience working with live teaching animals (reptiles, amphibians, and others); willingness to teach and operate outdoors in buggy environments, extreme heat/cold, and changing weather conditions.
Physical Demands

Work when exposed to outdoor elements, including but not limited to adverse physical and weather conditions. Willingness to lift 20–40 pounds and walk approximately 3 miles daily. Driving required.
