Job summary

State of Iowa is seeking a 3rd shift Highway Technician Associate in Coralville to join the Iowa DOT. The role involves hands-on roadside work, operating snow equipment, and maintaining road infrastructure, with a shift Sunday–Friday from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM.

A $1.00 shift differential is included in addition to the starting wage of $24.48 per hour. Residency within 45 minutes of the Coralville Maintenance Garage is required within five months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• CDL permit required upon hire; Class A with endorsements within 5 months.
• Successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse check.
• Pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug screen; ongoing random testing.
• May need pesticide/herbicide certifications.
• Residency within five months of hire; must reside within 45 minutes of Coralville location.

Responsibilities

• Patch roadway.
• Repair and maintain guardrails, signs, fences, lighting, culverts, and waterways.
• Participate in traffic control for maintenance activities.
• Pick up and dispose of litter and debris.
• Operate snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways.
• Mow, cut brush and vegetation, and spray as needed.
• Perform routine maintenance and servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles.

This 3rd shift position runs Sunday through Friday, 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM, to promote a safer work environment due to lower traffic volume. Due to this unique schedule, a $1.00 shift differential is included in addition to the starting wage of $24.48 an hour.

As a Highway Technician Associate, your day-to-day work will often be on the roadside and include:

• Patching roadway
• Repairing and maintaining guardrails, signs, fences, lighting, culverts, and waterways
• Participating in traffic control for maintenance activities
• Picking up and disposing of litter and debris
• Operating snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways
• Mowing, cutting brush, weed, and vegetation control, and spraying
• Performing routine maintenance and servicing DOT equipment and vehicles

Residency:

Coralville Maintenance Garage - Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from the assigned work location.

Shift:

10:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday through Friday. Hours may vary, and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

Requirements:

• A CDL permit upon hire.
• Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.

Entry-level driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT. The multifaceted training will help meet all state and federal regulations.

• A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
