General Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The teacher shall prayerfully teach subject matter that helps students understand Scripture, develop habits, learn Christian attitudes, and practice skills that prepare them to be productive, capable members of society and faithful servants of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Staff Manual and Student/Parent Handbook provide additional requirements and govern matters not addressed in this general description.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: As a Christian teacher, the teacher shall be spiritually mature and possess the necessary academic and leadership qualities to \"train up a child in the way he should go.\" The teacher shall embrace the purpose of the school: to graduate young men and women whose minds and hearts have been trained to love that which is worth loving. The teacher shall hold at least a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and demonstrate suitable training and experience, unless the Board grants an exception under the Staff Manual. The teacher shall feel called by God to the teaching profession. A valid teaching certificate may be preferred but is not required. The Board may establish additional qualifications as appropriate.

Employment

• EMPLOYMENT: Employed pursuant to an annual Work Agreement approved by the Board; work dates are established in the annual staff calendar.
• REPORTS TO: The appropriate Dean or Headmaster. Serves under the policies and authority of the Board.
• SUPERVISES: Students, aides, and volunteers as assigned.

Responsibilities

Spiritual

1. Model in attitude, speech, and actions a consistent daily walk with Jesus Christ.
2. Be a student and lover of Scripture, using the Bible and the school’s curriculum guides in preparing daily instruction.
3. Follow the principles of Matthew 18 and James 3 when addressing concerns involving students, parents, staff, or administration.
4. Help students understand their dignity as persons made in God’s image; clearly present the Gospel and encourage students to repent, believe, and grow in faith.
5. Seek to make the Gospel predominant in the classroom atmosphere, performing duties as a minister and steward of the Christian faith.

Instructional

1. Recognize that God holds parents primarily responsible for their child’s education and assist parents in this task (in loco parentis).
2. Teach assigned classes in accordance with the curriculum guides, including the established scope and sequence.
3. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of and interest in assigned subjects; use clear language and appropriate vocabulary; and help students understand how all subjects are interrelated as parts of God’s ordered universe.
4. Embrace classical Christian education and continue growing in the understanding and execution of its historically rich pedagogy.
5. Prepare creative and well-ordered daily, weekly, quarterly, and semester plans that reflect wise use of class time and follow the objectives, materials, priorities, and methods established in the curriculum guides.
6. Stimulate and maintain student interest; respond reasonably to individual learning needs; and use varied methods, in addition to testing, to assess student progress according to the objectives established in the curriculum guides.
7. Know and apply both the spirit and the letter of the school rules; maintain an orderly working atmosphere; and ordinarily address corrective discipline within the classroom. When administrative discipline is required, accompany the student to the appropriate administrator and provide an accurate account of the offense.

Non-Instructional

1. Cooperate with the Board and administration in implementing all policies, procedures, and directives governing school operations.
2. Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records for each student.
3. Develop strong relationships with students and their families; keep parents informed about classroom learning, student progress, and deficiencies; and welcome appropriate parent visits and assistance in accordance with school policy.
4. Establish simple, effective routines for attendance, homework collection, cleaning, and the storage and distribution of materials. Maintain a clean, organized, stimulating, aesthetically beautiful, and well-ordered classroom, involving students appropriately in its care.
5. Supervise co-curricular and extracurricular activities as assigned.

Professional

1. Use educational opportunities and evaluation processes for professional growth.
2. Seek appropriate counsel from administrators and colleagues while maintaining a teachable attitude; collaborate with parents regarding their own children.
3. Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings, prayer meetings, school assemblies, professional development days, and required or approved off-site training.

Personal

1. Demonstrate enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality.
2. Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, and staff by treating others with friendliness, dignity, and consideration.

Evaluation

Performance of these responsibilities will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and the evaluation procedures established in the Staff Manual.
