Job description

Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking for a 3rd Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia.


Responsibilities

  • Marine Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for various purposes, including interior communications.
  • Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.
  • Perform routine tasks such as replacing components, wiring circuits, and testing with instruments like digital multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Work under supervision with technical guidance, with work checked for accuracy.
  • Display qualities aligned with company values: safety, integrity, respect, engagement, and performance.
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships.
  • Layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic cables on Navy vessels.
  • Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical documents.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment problems.
  • Remove and install cables in overhead, bulkhead, or deck locations.
  • Inspect work for conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain effective communication with supervisors and managers.
  • Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cables and equipment aboard naval vessels.
  • Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or trade school certificate.
  • 2-3 years of experience in electrical systems on Navy, Coast Guard, MSC, or maritime vessels, with practical shipboard experience.
  • Familiarity with Interior Communications (IC) systems.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Pass pre-employment drug test and background check.
  • Ability to access government installations with a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and travel as required.
  • Experience with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors.
  • Possession of trade-specific hand tools.
  • Effective communication skills and team experience.
  • Understanding of NSI 009-73 requirements and experience with electrical troubleshooting, testing, and cable installation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current NAVSEA Multipin Connector Certifications (NSI 009-73).
  • NAVSEA Fiber Optic certification (NSI 009-123).
  • NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications.
  • Vocational or skilled trades certification.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance.
  • OSHA 10 Maritime Certification.
  • Microsoft Office skills.

Physical Demands
  • Lift and transport heavy equipment (at least 30 lbs).
  • Work on ladders, in extreme temperature environments, confined spaces, and aboard ships.
  • May require wearing a respirator and traveling.
