Job summary

City College of San Francisco is seeking a Pool Lifeguard to ensure the health and safety of students and pool users at the college’s facilities. Under the Aquatics Coordinator, you will monitor activities, respond to emergencies, perform rescues, administer CPR and First Aid, and enforce pool rules during PE classes and events.

The position is part-time, with on-call, early mornings, weekends, and evenings; it requires in-person presence and the ability to perform physically demanding duties.

Qualifications

  • Lifeguarding certification issued by ARC or equivalent and CPR/AED certification required.
  • Certifications must be current throughout employment; renewal as required by issuing agency.
  • Possession of Oxygen Administration and Title 22 First Aid within 12 months of appointment required.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol and monitor pool activities and patrons to prevent accidents and identify persons in distress.
  • Perform lifeguarding rescues, administer CPR and first aid as needed, and coordinate with emergency responders.
  • Enforce pool rules, maintain order around the pool, and communicate safety information to students and staff.
  • Maintain and disinfect pool facilities and equipment; monitor water quality as needed.
  • Prepare the facility for classes and events; manage equipment and revenues for pool use.
  • Provide customer service and information about facility operations and schedules; complete incident reports when necessary.
  • Record-keeping and reporting related to incidents and pool usage.

Under general direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, the 3208 Pool Lifeguard is responsible for the health and safety of students and pool users, and enforcement of rules/regulations at a District-operated swimming pool. Responsibilities include maintaining safe and healthy environment in and around the swimming pool; recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies; conducting rescue operations and provide emergency care and administerCPRand First Aid as required; communicate with PE classes students, pool users, and faculty/staff about pool rules/regulations; cleaning and disinfecting the pool, decks and aquatic equipment; monitor showers and locker rooms as needed; prepare the pool for various PE classes and other programs; and performing related duties as required. Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: sufficient strength and coordination to rescue submerged victims and remove them from the water without the use of a ladder or stairs.

NOTE: Part-time as needed employees are expected to make themselves available for on-call, early morning opening shifts, weekends, and closing evening shifts. Please note, successful candidates areNOTguaranteed specific fixed hours.

EXAMPLESOFIMPORTANTANDESSENTIALDUTIES

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Patrol and monitor pool activities, facility patrons and swimmers to prevent accidents; identify people in distress or those in danger.

2. Conduct rescue operations; perform lifesaving techniques; assist swimmers in distress and rescue swimmers in danger; pull drowning victims out of the water; call for emergency assistance; perform first aid resuscitative measures when necessary.

3. Communicate with facility patrons; caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforce pool rules and regulations; maintain order in and around the pool.

4. Maintain aquatic facility by inspecting and observing the pool area, lobby, change rooms and deck for safety and cleanliness; preform general pool facility maintenance duties including cleaning and disinfecting pool, lobby, change rooms and deck; may take and record water quality samples in the absence of a supervisor.

5. Prepare the facility for various aquatic events; handle and store equipment and materials when not in use.

6. Collect revenue and fees for facility use and participation in facility activities and events; greet and check in facility guests.

7. Provide customer service; share general information regarding facility operations, programs and schedules.
8. Prepare incident and accident reports as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

1. Lifeguarding issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency;
2.CPR/AEDfor the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency;
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Sufficient strength and coordination to rescue submerged victims and remove them from the water.
Certifications must be kept current throughout the length of employment. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of current/valid certification may result in termination of employment.
Possession of the following certification or equivalent within twelve (12) months of appointment:
1. Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency; and
2. Title 22 – First Aid for Public Safety Personnel issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Experience working as a lifeguard.
2. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientations, disabilities, and ethnic backgrounds.
3. Ability to perform difficult record keeping involving considerable amount of judgment, speed and accuracy.
4. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
5. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with students, faculty/staff, public and others.
6. Ability to relate to a culturally, socially diversified student body.
7. Effective communication skills.
8. Ability to perform under pressure, andanalyze situations accurately and adapt effective courses of action.
9. Good problem-solving skills.
10. Ability to interpret and implement applicable laws, regulations, policies, directives and procedures.

1. New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF).

2. Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas and New Year’s Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days off during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year’s Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreements between the employee and supervisor.
