Job description

Position Summary: Sets up, programs and operates both manual and computerized controlled equipment capable of performing multiple machining operations. Sets up machines, loads work, checks numerical data, and runs jobs. Use precision measuring tools to verify machining operations. Takes corrective action and repositions as required.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work from blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files.
  • Program, set up operate, and tear down manual, automatic, or computer numeric controller (CNC) machine tools.
  • Calculate dimensions using measuring instruments and calculator.
  • Install, align, secure, and adjust cutting tools and work pieces.
  • Calculate and monitor the feed and speed of machines.
  • Turn, mill, drill, shape, and grind machine parts to specifications.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed products for defects.
  • Deburr all surfaces of parts or products to ensure that they conform to specifications.
  • Produce multiple quantities of parts, especially parts requiring the use of complex operation and great precision.
  • Determines the cutting path, the speed of the cut, and the feed rate by programming instructions into the CNC machine.
  • Controls purchases and inventoried CNC related tooling (Cutters, Drills, Taps, Bars and Etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • 3-5 years' experience in a Manufacturing Environment
  • Machinist Papers or related experience preferred
  • May need to know how to use CAD and normally operate CNC's
  • Ability to understand highly technical electronic or written blueprints, models, and specifications.
  • Work requires highly accurate and precise parts; concentration and attention to detail is a must.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
  • Sheet metal and tube fabrication skills a plus
  • Must have good math and computer skills to work with CAD/CAM technology, CNC machine tools, and computerized measuring machines.
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Ability to endure long periods of standing and doing repetitious movements.
  • Experience with HAAS & Fanuc Controls a plus
  • Must have technical skills to understand computerized measuring machines and metalworking process, such as stock removal, chip control, and heat treating and plating.
  • Ability to speak and write clear English, informatively and persuasively in positive or negative situations; Listens and gets clarification; Responds well to questions and varies writing style to meet needs; Participates in meetings.
  • Observes safety and security procedures; Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; Reports potentially unsafe conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment; Manages competing demands; Changes approach or method to best fit the situation; Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Ability to follow instructions, responds to management direction; Takes responsibility for own actions; Keeps commitments; Commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals; Completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Physical Demands.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear, frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and occasionally required to stand; walk, climb or balance; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work schedule for this classification is full-time. Incumbents must work a full-time (30) hours or more per week schedule.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and is exposed to non-air-conditioned areas. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate where hearing protection is necessary based on OSHA requirements. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
