Job Description
The 2nd Shift Lead Maintenance Technician at Aztalan Bio is a full-time position responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repair activities while providing day-to-day leadership and technical guidance to the maintenance team at the company’s biorefinery in Jefferson, Wisconsin. This position works Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and serves as the primary maintenance point of contact during the assigned shift. The Lead Maintenance Technician assists the Maintenance Foreman with coordinating and prioritizing daily maintenance activities, assigning work based on technician skills and production needs, mentoring team members, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently while minimizing production downtime.Key responsibilities include performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance and troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, steam, gas, water, and air systems. The position repairs and rebuilds industrial equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, conveyors, valves, blowers, compressors, fans, agitators, vehicles, and grain-processing equipment and performs equipment alignment, balancing, vibration analysis, and lubrication as needed. The Lead Maintenance Technician also supports planned maintenance, plant shutdowns, equipment installations, and process improvements; documents work orders, inspections, repairs, and equipment history in the CMMS; and identifies equipment deficiencies and opportunities to improve safety, quality, and reliability.The Lead Maintenance Technician works closely with Production, Engineering, contractors, and other departments to maximize equipment availability and provides training and technical guidance to technicians and operators on maintenance procedures, safe work practices, and equipment care. The position promotes compliance with company safety policies, EHS requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and housekeeping standards and serves as the acting maintenance lead when the Maintenance Foreman is unavailable. The role also participates in the facility’s on‑call rotation, approximately one week every eight weeks, to support operational needs outside of normal working hours.
Job Requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of four years of industrial mechanical maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably within chemical or food manufacturing. Previous experience providing work direction, technical mentorship, or informal leadership to maintenance personnel is preferred. A trade school degree or certification is preferred, although equivalent mechanical maintenance experience will be considered. Candidates should have welding and fabrication experience, as applicable, and hands‑on experience maintaining and repairing industrial equipment such as conveyors, pumps, valves, compressors, gearboxes, and other processing equipment. The ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings and schematics is required, along with working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office applications. Candidates must also have forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification.The successful candidate must demonstrate strong mechanical troubleshooting, problem‑solving, organizational, communication, leadership, teamwork, and decision‑making skills. The position requires the ability to prioritize multiple maintenance needs in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment while maintaining attention to detail and a strong commitment to safety, quality, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement. The role requires working around moving mechanical equipment, moderate to high noise levels, process chemicals, humid conditions, and outdoor temperatures that may include extreme heat and cold. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, steel‑toed boots, flame‑resistant clothing, and hearing protection, is required as applicable. Candidates must also be able to perform the physical requirements of an industrial maintenance position, including regular walking and standing, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and regularly lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
