We are looking for an experienced California-based 2D Supervisor to lead the creative and technical delivery of compositing across our visual effects projects. Working closely with the VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, Heads of Department and Production, you will help define the approach for each show, guide artists through complex challenges and deliver consistently high-quality work.
From show setup to final shot reviews, you will combine compositing expertise with confident, collaborative leadership – shaping efficient workflows, supporting the team and maintaining visual continuity across sequences.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with the VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, Heads of Department and Leads to establish the show’s creative and technical compositing approach.
- Contribute to bidding and show planning by assessing compositing requirements, technical options, resource needs and production schedules.
- Oversee the setup of the 2D workflow and colour pipeline, establishing clear standards for compositing across the show.
- Break down work by sequence and shot complexity, collaborating with the Resources team to identify appropriate staffing and experience levels.
- Identify R&D requirements, new software or tools, and opportunities to streamline workflows; work with Leads to resolve pipeline challenges and bottlenecks.
- Lead and attend desk rounds and dailies, providing clear creative and technical direction, constructive feedback and shot approvals.
- Maintain regular communication with the VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor and Leads, ensuring the 2D team is aligned on show priorities and decisions.
- Work closely with Production to assess artist schedules, communicate shot progress, flag risks and support realistic, efficient delivery.
- Oversee the development of sequence template scripts and establish sequence grades to support consistency and efficient shot production.
- Review completed shots in the cut, ensuring continuity, visual consistency and alignment with the overall creative vision.
- Support Leads and artists in resolving complex compositing challenges, including reviewing scripts and providing practical technical advice.
- Mentor and develop 2D artists through regular feedback, training, knowledge sharing and support with creative and technical problem-solving.
- Collaborate with the Talent Team on recruitment and provide team performance feedback to the Head of 2D and Crew Manager.
- Contribute to show wrap-up activities, including showreel material, assets for the global library and post-mortem reviews to identify improvements.
Requirements:
- Strong professional compositing experience and advanced working knowledge of Nuke, including the ability to troubleshoot complex scripts and workflows.
- Thorough understanding of the end-to-end VFX pipeline, colour workflows and the demands of a post-production environment.
- Proven leadership skills, with the ability to inspire artists, delegate effectively and develop talent at different experience levels.
- Excellent creative judgement, problem-solving ability and attention to detail, with a commitment to visual consistency and quality.
- Clear, confident communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors, Leads, Production and artists.
- Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and time-sensitive workloads.
- A proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical issues, improving tools and optimising compositing workflows.
- Up-to-date knowledge of VFX tools, technologies and emerging techniques.
