Job summary

Gerdau in Petersburg, VA is seeking an overhead crane operator to lift and transfer scrap between the loading area and the furnace. You will operate a 270-ton crane, move raw materials, add electrodes, and participate in maintenance tasks in a heat-intensive melt shop.

The role requires 3 years crane experience, the ability to work a 12-hour rotating Dupont schedule, and the physical stamina to handle 50 lb lifting and high temperatures. The position offers strong benefits and a path for growth.

Qualifications

• Basic computer skills required.
• 3 years experience operating a cab-controlled overhead crane from an elevated operator cab.
• Ability to work in a self-directed team with limited supervision.
• Willingness to work a 12 hr Dupont rotating shift (days, nights, two weekends a month).
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in temperatures up to 160 degrees.
• Ability to work in cramped quarters and at heights up to 150 ft.

Responsibilities

• Operate a 270 ton overhead charging crane to move scrap from loading area to the furnace for charging.
• Lift, move, and position raw materials and refill material bins; perform electrode additions.
• Plan the sequence of material movement to service the melt shop efficiently.
• Manipulate crane controls to regulate speed and direction of crane/hoist movement.
• Inspect crane for defects and notify supervisor of malfunctions.
• May serve as Relief Ladle Crane Operator when needed.
• Perform routine equipment care and inspect vehicles and mobile equipment.
