Program Overview

Bechtel's U.S. Summer Internship Program provides students with an opportunity to gain meaningful, hands‑on experience while working alongside industry professionals on projects and initiatives that impact communities around the world. The program is a structured 10-week summer experience, typically held from mid-June through mid-August, designed to help students translate classroom learning into practical application through challenging assignments, professional development activities, and exposure to Bechtel's global business.


Interns are treated as valuable members of the team and are assigned work that contributes directly to business objectives. Throughout the internship, participants are encouraged to build technical and professional skills, expand their industry knowledge, and develop relationships with leaders and peers across the organization.


The internship experience combines real project work, professional development programming, networking opportunities, executive speaker sessions, mentorship, and end-of-program presentations to help students gain a deeper understanding of their chosen career path while exploring future opportunities with Bechtel.



Work Location & Assignments

Opportunities are available across Bechtel's Global Business Units (GBU) and functional organizations. Final assignment location, business unit placement, and specific responsibilities will be determined based on business needs, candidate qualifications, and organizational priorities.


Assignments may be located in a project field environment, regional office, or corporate office setting depending on business needs. Successful candidates should be flexible and willing to work in a variety of locations and environments in support of Bechtel's projects and business operations. This may include opportunities at construction sites, project execution offices, or functional and corporate service organizations.



Job Summary

Bechtel has a strong tradition of technical and engineering excellence in supporting multiple industries. Bechtel's internship program was created to cultivate real‑life industry interest based on hands‑on experience. Many new university graduate hires began their careers at Bechtel as a student intern.


Corporate communications and public affairs interns will provide support to corporate, business and project teams in a variety of areas including business communications, media and public relations, social media, executive communications, issues management and crisis communications, marketing and branding, video production, graphic design, podcasts, and research. Additionally, assistance with data and document management or other non-technical related areas will be provided.



Major Responsibilities


  • Performs research, writing, and assists in the compilation or background information on specific public affairs issues

  • Assists in monitoring media articles as they affect business

  • Performs a variety of tasks, including coordinating meetings and events, writing news releases and regional media alerts, developing articles for internal and external communications, and updating social media outlets (e.g. Facebook and Twitter)

  • Creates information products using graphic design

  • Responds to client inquiries and performs research for special assignments

  • Produces communication plans for internal and external initiatives

  • Demonstrates the character, desire, and commitment to work collaboratively with a team that prioritizes service to internal and external customers, and ultimately, achieving the overarching goals of the enterprise.



Education And Experience Requirements


  • Currently enrolled in a four-year bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Broadcasting, Mass Communications or a related field from an accredited college or University

  • Completed at least two years of undergraduate studies

  • Possess the eligibility to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship

  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check

  • Proficient in writing, editing, computer applications, and operating systems

  • Proficient in AP Stylebook writing guidelines



Required Knowledge And Skills


  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point

  • Proficient writing experience

  • Experience in graphic design software, such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop

  • Familiarity with web design, content management systems such as SharePoint or WordPress, and social media.

  • Advanced skills in written and oral communications
