Job summary

Hilcorp Energy Company is seeking an Automation/SCADA Engineer to support the design, installation, and maintenance of field automation systems across Alaska operations.

The role requires hands-on programming of PLCs, HMI development, and troubleshooting across a range of platforms. You will work with Instrumentation and Electrical teams, adhere to standards, and mentor junior staff in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/IT/CS or related technical field with 3 years of experience in Industrial Process Control/SCADA.
  • Associate’s degree in related technical field with 5 years of progressive SCADA experience.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience in Industrial Process Control/SCADA or OT roles.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with design, maintenance and operation of Automation/SCADA, distributed control, telemetry input, and computer systems for field operations.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain industrial controls equipment with field Instrumentation and Electrical Team.
  • Design and manage control system and SCADA projects.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs including Allen-Bradley, GE and Modicon.
  • Design, program and troubleshoot HMI/DCS applications (Wonderware, GE iFIX, Honeywell Experion).
  • Maintain process control networks using Ethernet, OPC, Modbus, and related protocols.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings and P&IDs.
  • Mentor junior staff and develop standard documentation for automation systems.

Job description

Job Objective:
Assists with the technical work in the administration, maintenance, and operation of Automation/SCADA, distributed control, telemetry input, and computer systems for field operations.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Strong working knowledge of Industrial Automation/SCADA architecture design including control, measurement and safety systems for oil and gas production facilities.
  • Work with field Instrumentation and Electrical Team assisting with troubleshooting and maintenance of industrial controls-related equipment.
  • Design and manage control system and SCADA related projects.
  • Keep abreast of new Automation/SCADA related developments and technology in areas such as equipment, software, government regulations, PCN cybersecurity, and communications.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLC based control systems including Allen-Bradley (PLC 5, SLC, Control Logix), GE and Modicon.
  • Design, Program, and Troubleshoot HMI/DCS applications to include graphical design, scripting, and database queries on platforms including Wonderware, GE iFIX and Honeywell Experion.
  • Set up and maintain process control networks using Ethernet, OPC, Modbus, ControlNet and other Automation specific protocols.
  • Read, understand, and troubleshoot electrical drawings and P&IDs.
  • Document Automation/SCADA systems per established procedures.
  • Mentor and help train junior level personnel through training and review of their work plans and system installs.
  • Coordinate and participate in the design, development and administration of standards and documentation relating to automation systems.
  • Enforce adherence to corporate Automation/SCADA standards.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to work 12 hours per day, 14/14 day rotational assignment on the North Slope of Alaska.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the company.
  • Strong ability in diagnosing and solving SCADA related problems while maintaining patience, professionalism, and courtesy.
  • Understanding of Automation/SCADA system setup and maintenance regarding administration, programming, database administration, telemetry, and RTU input management understanding of the technology related to SCADA design and maintenance of a SCADA system.
  • Understanding of Industry standard alarming and governance
  • Ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines, and concentrate on detailed information in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials, and the public.
  • Solid understanding of desktop computers, networking, printers, and general office applications.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with specific ability to translate complex computer/information systems information into an organized and presentable manner.
  • Ability to complete multiple, diverse tasks of differing priorities.
  • Oil and gas industry experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with one or more of the following software platforms:
    AVEVA System Platform (and OMI), AVEVA InTouch, Honeywell Experion & Safety Builder, Rockwell Studio 5000, Emerson PAC Machine Edition, ProWORX 32, Siemens 4-mation, ABB S+ Engineering/Composer.
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related technical field plus three (3) years of experience in Industrial Process Control/SCADA.

OR

  • Associate's Degree in a related technical field plus five (5) years of progressive experience in SCADA or automation environments.

OR

  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in Industrial Process Control, SCADA, or Operational Technology roles.
