Job Description Summary

The Campus Safety NFWS Student Worker supports the Campus Safety department in two capacities: (1) as Event Staff, providing a safety and customer-service presence at University events, and (2) as a Relief Pool Officer, covering open shifts within the regular Campus Safety patrol schedule. This is a non-sworn, entry-level student position that operates under the direct supervision of full-time Campus Safety staff. The role does not carry law-enforcement authority, arrest powers, or independent judgment calls on policy or disciplinary matters — it supports and executes the processes and post orders defined by Campus Safety leadership.

Job Description Key Responsibilities
Event Staffing
  • Provide a visible safety and security presence at University events (athletics, concerts, commencement, move-in/move-out, and similar)
  • Monitor venue access points; check credentials, tickets, or event passes as required
  • Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic flow at event entrances, exits, and parking areas
  • Respond to minor incidents or questions on-site and notify dispatch/full-time staff for anything requiring escalation
  • Assist with crowd management and support emergency evacuation procedures as directed
Relief Pool Officer
  • Cover open shifts within the regular Campus Safety patrol schedule arising from call-outs, vacancies, or seasonal demand
  • Conduct routine foot and/or vehicle patrols of campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas as assigned
  • Monitor and secure building access points; lock/unlock facilities per the posted schedule
  • Document observations, activities, and incidents in daily logs and the incident reporting system
General Duties
  • Operate assigned radios and University safety communication systems
  • Provide directions and general customer service to students, staff, and visitors
  • Report safety hazards, maintenance issues, and policy violations to full-time Campus Safety staff
  • Assist with lost-and-found, parking, and traffic-control support as needed
Training Requirement

Field Training Officer (FTO) Program — Mandatory: All Campus Safety NFWS Student Workers must complete an 80-hour Field Training Officer (FTO) program before being cleared to work independently across all assigned shift types (event staffing, patrol, and relief-pool coverage, including evening and overnight shifts). Until FTO completion and sign-off, shifts are limited to paired/supervised assignments as determined by the Campus Safety Lieutenant.

Qualifications
  • Must be a currently enrolled Saint Leo University student eligible for Non-Federal Work Study (NFWS) employment
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Successful completion of a background check is required prior to start
  • Availability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and University event days
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills
  • Ability to remain calm and follow established post orders and escalation procedures in routine and non-routine situations
  • Prior security, safety, customer-service, or hospitality experience preferred but not required

One of the Top-Ranked Universities in Florida

One of the top-ranked universities in Florida, Saint Leo is a Catholic, liberal arts school serving learners of all faiths. We are traditional, but we are cutting edge. Established in 1889 by the Order of Saint Benedict of Florida, the university seeks balanced growth in mind, body and spirit for all members of our community. Saint Leo has grown from a peaceful campus in the rolling hills of Central Florida to an institution of international consequence—ranked one of the best regional universities in the South by U.S. News & World Report. Our Tampa-area campus remains committed as ever to student-centered liberal arts education, and is strengthened by the global reach of our regionally accredited online programs and Education Centers in seven states across the U.S., including on many military bases.

We are Catholic, but we are for everyone. Our determination to make higher education more accessible to all has made Saint Leo a world leader in redefining the 21st century university. Saint Leo now serves more than 16,000 students from 49 states and 86 countries—ranking us among the five largest Catholic higher education institutions in the United States. Saint Leo is also one of the nation's 10 leading providers of higher education to the U.S. military. While we are proudly Catholic, we teach students not because they are Catholic, but because we are Catholic. And our faith compels us to imagine and contribute to a more socially just society.
