Saint Leo University is seeking a Lieutenant to lead Campus Safety and Security operations, reporting to the Operations Manager. You will command field responses, coordinate with PCSO, and oversee the Field Training Program to ensure competency before officers patrol solo.
The role focuses on field command and training while administrative tasks are handled by the Operations Manager. A Florida security license and supervisory experience are required.
The Lieutenant is the day-to-day operational lead of the Saint Leo University Campus Safety and Security Department, reporting to the Operations Manager. The LT commands field response to major and emerging incidents, oversees the Field Training Program, coordinates directly with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) on operational matters, and serves as the after-hours operational escalation point for the on‑duty Corporal. This is an operational leadership role — administrative functions such as master scheduling, training‑record maintenance, and use‑of‑force/incident report administration are handled by the Operations Manager, freeing the LT to focus on field command and training.
Field Incident Command Serve as the operational escalation point and, for major or emerging incidents, incident commander for events including alarm/fire/EMS activations, bomb threats, active threats, fights, suicidal‑subject and mental health crisis calls, severe weather emergencies, and missing‑student/welfare‑check cases, per the Incident‑Specific Response Procedures (Section 12 of the Campus Safety and Security Program manual). Authorize call‑back of off‑duty Officers or activation of the Part‑Time (PT) Officer pool when a shift falls below minimum staffing, personally or through a designated after‑hours contact. Coordinate directly with PCSO on operational matters, including joint response to active incidents and event‑related deployments. Coordinate no less than semi‑annual joint training exercises with PCSO covering active‑threat response, large‑event security, and radio interoperability. Field Training Program (FTO) Oversee the 80‑hour, four‑phase Field Training Officer (FTO) program for every newly hired Officer. Provide final competency evaluation and written sign‑off before any Officer is released to solo patrol; assign a documented remediation plan and additional supervised hours for any trainee who does not demonstrate satisfactory competency. Pair incoming trainees with a qualified FTO (an experienced Corporal or senior Officer) for each of the four training phases. Operational Supervision Serve as the direct operational supervisor of the four squad Corporals, providing field guidance and shift‑level direction. Set event staffing levels for sporting events and other scheduled campus events (Sections 12.3–12.4), in coordination with squad Corporals, Athletics, and the Events Office. Work special events designated as necessary by the Department, including events occurring at night, on weekends, or during holidays, in addition to the standard Monday‑Friday day‑shift schedule. Countersign trespass warnings issued by Officers/Corporals, per the Trespass Warning Procedure (Section 12.5). Receive and act on process‑improvement observations submitted by Officers and Corporals; participate in after‑action reviews of significant incidents and equipment failures. Provide field‑level input into the annual Program review conducted by the Operations Manager and AVP of Human Resources & Campus Safety.
Active, unrestricted Florida Class “D” Security Officer License (or ability to obtain prior to start) Prior supervisory experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field Current or ability to obtain certification in CPR/First Aid/AED, OC spray deployment, and restraint (handcuffing) application Demonstrated de‑escalation and mental‑health crisis intervention skills Working knowledge of Florida Statutes Chapter 493 (private security licensure) and Chapter 776 (use of force/defense of property) Ability to complete a University‑administered background check and suitability screening Valid driver’s license and ability to operate patrol vehicles and utility/golf carts Strong written communication skills for incident documentation and field reporting.
