Position Overview

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks graduatestudents as Teaching Associate applicants. Teaching Associatestypically are responsible for providing laboratory instruction forgeneral education courses. Eligibility is determined by successful TA eligibility , department eligibility, and adequatefunding.

  • The department is seeking TA applicants for sections of CHEM 1Alab and CHEM 3A lab.
  • TAs will teach sections of CHEM 1A lab or CHEM 3A lab thefollowing semester and could have opportunities to teach otherbeginning courses in the Chemistry and BiochemistryDepartment.

The department reserves the right to choose the most qualifiedcandidate for each position and to assign TAs to the courses thatare appropriate for the department program and curriculum in anygiven semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes, coursesoffered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester tosemester can be made.

Anticipated Appointment Dates
  • Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026;
  • Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027
Hours/Units per week

Students can work up to 20-hours perweek;

  • 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hours per week (40hrs x1-unit/15-unit)
  • The typical range for labs is between 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus(dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)
  • No more than 7.5-units
Job Duties
  • Perform laboratory or discussion section instruction for one ormore course offerings
  • Create a laboratory or discussion classroom environment that isconducive to learning
  • Use of Canvas or designated learning management system(LMS)
  • Create assignments for students
  • Prepare course materials, e.g. organizational set-up of labmaterials or quizzes
  • Respond to and evaluate student writing
  • Administer examinations
  • Assist with proctoring examinations for lecture sections
  • Assess student performance on lab exams/assignments and helpfaculty instructor integrate laboratory performance by each studentinto their final course grades
  • Supervise small discussion groups
  • Assist students outside of class or laboratory hours, includingbut not limited to holding office hours and by appointment
  • Attend TA orientation sessions at the beginning of thesemester
  • Attend meetings scheduled by the faculty or staff for purposesof briefing, coordination, and discussion of course content
  • Show responsiveness to improvement suggestions from faculty,coordinator, and student evaluations of instructionalperformance
  • Complete appropriate safety training sessions and ensure thatstudents in laboratory sections are following safetyprocedures
  • Participate in programmatic assessment procedures
  • Perform other assignments supportive of universityinstruction
  • Operate in a collegial fashion with members of the Chemistryand Biochemistry Department and with other Universityemployees
Qualifications

  • Evaluations: For details please view the Academic Policy Manual,Section 311
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Pleasecheck with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salaryis calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.
  • Salary Schedule: The CSU Salary Schedule can be found here (Class Code = 2354 for Teaching Associates).
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair orProgram Coordinator after consultation with the teachingassociate.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective BargainingAgreement for Unit 11 , a Duties Form (see Appendix E of theCBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic StudentEmployee. This form substantiates the jobs included for thedepartment teaching associate position.
  • Teaching Associate is a student position for those activelyenrolled in a graduate program at Fresno State.
  • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work oncampus.
