Job summary

General Motors seeks a Manufacturing Engineering intern to gain hands-on experience across plant and corporate locations in the United States, focusing on developing processes, equipment, and tools for Assembly plants. The role involves collaboration to reduce energy and waste and to support the factory of the future.

You will work on analyzing methods, validating improvements, and programming manufacturing technology across diverse sites, with travel to several Michigan locations and beyond.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology, with graduation expected December 2027 to June 2029.
• Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.
• Willing to work any shift, potentially including weekends, in a plant environment.
• Majors in Automation, Mechanical, Industrial, Mechatronics, Robotics, IT, or related fields preferred.

About the Roles:

As a Manufacturing Engineering intern for General Assembly, you will be exposed to various positions and assignments in plant and corporate staff locations throughout the United States aimed at cultivating development and to education. Develop processes, equipment, and tools for Assembly plants supporting approximately 30 launches each year globally

Collaborate with other centers to reduce energy and waste globally

Develop and evaluate manufacturing innovations to support the factory of the future

Responsible for all value-added systems for Vehicle Assembly including lean material strategies

Develop & Validate new Automation for all manufacturing sites including Autonomous Mobile Equipment

What You'll Do:

• Positions in the organization are hands-on and engaging. You will learn problem solving on the fly, to work collaboratively with many members of the team, and be able to flex your creative muscles. Most assignments will be located in Warren, MI, strategic partners around Southeast Michigan, or manufacturing sites in Michigan. Examples of General Assembly assignments available include:
• Analyze product, process, and technology to craft best methods to assemble vehicles, and protect the manufacturing process
• Recommend and validate improvement for existing processes
• Support evaluation of innovative technologies to address current manufacturing challenges
• Develop tools to improve program/project management
• Assist in the design, build, and validation of tools and equipment
• Programming of manufacturing technology
• Assist maintenance personnel in operation and maintenance of specialized equipment
• Troubleshoots special maintenance and equipment problems
• Coordinate machinery and equipment upgrade projects

Required Qualifications:

• Pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology in one of the following areas: Automation, Automotive, Computer/Computer Science/Computer Animation, Construction Management, Civil, Industrial, Industrial Operations, Information Technology, Kinesiology, Machine Learning, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Software, Data Scientists, or equivalent
• Must be graduating December 2027 and June 2029
• Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during the summer months
• Must be willing to work any shift, potentially including weekends
• Must be willing to work in a plant environment

Travel varies based on assignment and may be required to strategic partners and plants.

Work Arrangement

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a GM or supplier facility, as designated by the business, on a full-time basis. GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2026 Student Program.
