Job description

The Role:

This internship exposes qualified candidates to creative careers at General Motors and helps identify talent for direct positions in creative clay sculpting at Design. The individual will gain an understanding of the aesthetic judgments, technology, production methods, program timelines, and materials used in automotive clay sculpting.


The Team:

The intern will collaborate with GM Design, Sculpting, and Engineering teams in an automotive design studio environment.


What You'll Do:


  • Work collaboratively with Design, Sculpting, and Engineering to interpret sketches and develop clay scale models of a future automotive theme using established and emerging clay-sculpting best practices and techniques.

  • Present finished models to Design and Sculpting leadership at midterm and final show events.

  • Support general sculpting assignments within the studio environment.

Required Qualifications:


  • Pursuit of a bachelor's degree or advanced degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Transportation Design, Fine Arts, Sculpture, or Ceramics.

  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and May 2029.

  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Creative ability demonstrated through a supporting 3D portfolio.

  • Basic understanding of design and sculpting principles, including proportion, line, and surface.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Proactive approach to task completion.

  • Follows studio safety guidelines.

  • Knowledge of current design trends.

Work Arrangement:

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. The successful candidate is expected to report to Pasadena, CA, or Warren, MI, on a full-time basis. Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed.


GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program.

Start dates for this internship role are May & June of 2027.


Compensation:

The salary for this role is $6,100 monthly.
