Position Title: AZCC 2026 Fall Flagstaff Field Crew Member – AmeriCorps

Purpose

Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) engages motivated young adults (ages 18–30) to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the western United States. AZCC crews serve in National Parks, National Forests, and other public areas, working on projects such as trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, historic preservation, invasive plant removal, and local environmental service projects.

Project Work

• Trail construction and maintenance
• Invasive species management, including pesticide application
• Habitat restoration
• Fence installation/repair
• Land Management Inventory and Mapping
• Fire fuels reduction
• National Disaster Relief up to 30 days at a time
• Community service

Description of Duties

Members serve a term of National Service in Arizona and parts of the Southwest on professionally supervised crews. They work in all weather conditions, camp multiple days near the project site, and complete project work while following appropriate safety procedures. This includes safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools as needed. Participants must be willing to be an active member of a team of up to seven individuals from diverse backgrounds.

• Safety – Adhere to program policies and contribute to a culture of safety on all program activities.
• Professionalism – Follow all AZCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent AZCC.
• Teamwork – Engage in collaboration, respect others, and assist in making group decisions.
• Technology – Use of technology will be limited, especially in remote locations.
• Substance Free – Refrain from alcohol and drugs while participating in the AZCC program.

Qualifications

• United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
• At least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalency certificate, or will obtain one before using the education award.
• Agree to provide information for eligibility and complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Physical Requirements

Named duty includes periodic overnight travel, non‑traditional hours, ability to move across varied terrain, use of program‑specific tools, and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force. Ability to drive an organizational vehicle may be required. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Time Requirements

• Service typically runs Tuesday to Tuesday; schedule may vary. A half‑hour lunch break is not counted toward service hours.
• Typical schedule is 8 days on / 6 days off (hitch) with no time off during hitches.
• Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their term.

Orientation and Training

• Orientation includes training on prohibited and unallowable activities.
• Training covers Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace, outdoor living, crew culture, and goal setting.
• Opportunities for instruction in herbicide, crosscut saw, chainsaw, or other specialized equipment use.
• Informal training continues throughout the term with on‑the‑ground skills training, including tool maintenance, plant identification, and overview of public land management agencies.

Housing

AZCC is an independent, non‑residential program. Members must supply their own outdoor gear and equipment (tent, sleeping bag, etc.). AZCC provides tools, personal protective gear, crew meal budget, and project transportation.

Evaluation and Reporting

Performance is evaluated based on completed hours, satisfactory completion of assignments, and meeting other performance criteria established at the start of the term. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
