Field Supervisor

Location: Transportation Dept

Non-Interim Position

12 mos, 8 hrs/day

Grade 32/Step 7: $25.90/hour

Purpose

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Transportation, the Field Supervisor ensures the safe and efficient daily operation of the district’s fleet. This role provides on‑site leadership through route monitoring, safety audits, and emergency incident response. By evaluating driver performance, investigating accidents, and resolving field‑level conflicts with parents and school staff, the Field Supervisor bridges the gap between department policy and real‑world execution to ensure student safety.

Essential Functions

• Conduct random and scheduled field observations of bus routes to ensure drivers adhere to designated paths, time schedules, and safety protocols.
• Evaluate the safety of existing and proposed bus stops, identifying hazards and recommending adjustments.
• Coordinate with Dispatch during peak hours to reroute buses due to road closures, reassign routes when short‑staffed, mechanical breakdowns, or weather‑related delays.
• Act as the primary District responder to all school bus accidents, student injuries, or major mechanical failures occurring in the field.
• Perform initial accident investigations, including taking photos, gathering witness statements, and coordinating post‑accident drug and alcohol testing.
• Serve as the District’s point of contact for police, fire, and EMS at the scene of an incident to ensure student safety and rapid information flow to the Director.
• Conduct formal performance evaluations of drivers and aides in the field, focusing on student management, defensive driving, and professional conduct.
• Deliver on‑the‑spot coaching or formal disciplinary recommendations when safety violations or policy infractions are observed.
• Intervene in high‑conflict situations at bus stops involving disgruntled parents, motorists, or difficult student behavior that exceeds a driver’s capacity to manage.
• Perform unannounced inspections of buses to ensure drivers complete required pre‑trip and post‑trip safety checks.
• Monitor the condition of the fleet in the field and report recurring maintenance issues or interior cleanliness problems to the Shop Foreman.
• Meet regularly with School Principals to coordinate loading zone procedures and address student discipline issues occurring on the bus.
• Investigate and resolve public complaints about driver behavior or traffic safety concerns.

Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Skills: operating standard office equipment; using pertinent software applications; operating heavy‑light‑duty vehicles; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge: safe driving practices; provisions of motor vehicle code and education code applicable to operation of vehicles transporting school students; state licensing requirements; methods of instruction related to in‑service training.

Abilities: schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather, collate, and classify data; consider a variety of factors when using equipment; flexibility; effective communication; maintaining rapport with employees, community and students; independent problem solving.

Responsibility

Work under limited supervision using standardized practices; lead, guide, and coordinate others; utilize resources from other work units.

Work Environment

Physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; fine finger dexterity. Job is performed 70% sitting, 25% walking, 5% standing. Exposure to temperature extremes and conditions with risk of injury or illness.

Experience

Minimum 2 years experience working in a Transportation department; job‑related experience with increasing levels of responsibility.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.
