Job description

Purpose Statement

The job of Transportation Dispatcher is to provide support to the educational process by coordinating and assigning drivers to regularly scheduled routes, special excursions, and field trips; processing requests for routine and emergency issues; maintaining department records; and coordinating assigned projects.

Position Details

Location: Transportation Department
Type: Non‑Interim position
Term: 12 months, 8 hours per day
Grade: 28 ($23.66 per hour)
Start Date: 08/20/2026
Reports to: Director of Transportation

Essential Functions
  • Assist in planning bus routes and schedules to ensure all routes are covered.
  • Collaborate with contracted charter buses for additional transportation needs, determining driver and equipment requirements.
  • Coordinate buses and drivers for extracurricular activities such as field trips and athletic events.
  • Dispatch drivers to meet schedule demands.
  • Inform school personnel and parents about practices, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Maintain a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records for documentation and compliance.
  • Operate a two‑way radio in accordance with FCC regulations.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, and other required activities for information gathering and dissemination.
  • Perform the functions of Transportation Bus Drivers as needed to meet transportation requirements.
  • Process materials such as field trip requests and route changes to update and distribute information.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and staff with information, directions, or resolution.
  • Respond to injuries and/or accidents, complying with established policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Schedule work assignments for bus drivers and aides to ensure safe and timely completion of routes in accordance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

SKILLS: Operate two‑way and county emergency radios, standard office equipment, and relevant software applications; perform clerical procedures; prepare and maintain accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE: Basic math including fractions, percents, and ratios; understanding of written procedures; ability to write routine documents and speak clearly; understanding of department policies, office practices, grammar, first aid, and CPR.

ABILITY: Schedule activities, meetings, or events; gather, collate, and classify data; adapt to changing priorities; meet deadlines and schedules; set priorities; work with detailed information and frequent interruptions; maintain rapport with employees, students, parents, and the public; problem‑solve by analyzing issues and creating action plans.

Responsibility

Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; lead, guide, and coordinate others; utilize resources from other units as needed; opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Requires some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; fine finger dexterity; 75% sitting, 15% walking, 10% standing; generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience
