Job description

Bus Driver / Bus Driver Trainee – Transportation

Location: Transportation Department. 9 months, full and part‑time available. Opportunity for benefits at 30 hours/week. Grade 27, $23.49/hour (starting pay up to $25.44 based on K‑12 bus driver experience). Several positions available. Start date: 7/30/2026.

CDL Training Provided: 40‑hour class and 20‑hour behind‑the‑wheel training required prior to contract. Training scheduled June & July. Pay during training. CPR and first aid training required and provided.

  • Proof of MMR (required if born after 12/31/56)
  • Certified 5‑year MVR (clear of any moving violations)
  • Valid IVP fingerprint clearance card
Purpose Statement

The job of Transportation Bus Driver is to provide support to the educational process by transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicle operation is in a safe condition and ensuring student safety during transport, loading, and unloading from buses.

Essential Functions
  • Advise students and other passengers on appropriate behavior to reinforce posted rules and maintain passenger safety.
  • Assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations (e.g., road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents) and recommend resolutions.
  • Assist students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.
  • Attend unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. to gather required information.
  • Clean assigned vehicles to ensure safety, appearance and sanitation.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills to ensure procedure efficiency and regulatory compliance.
  • Drive school bus/s to transport passengers over scheduled routes and authorized stops to and from school and/or field trips safely and promptly.
  • Fuel assigned vehicle (e.g., oil, water, fuel) to maintain vehicle in a safe operating condition.
  • Inform other school personnel and parents of events, policies and/or practices (e.g., scheduled stops, established routes, route conditions).
  • Monitor students and other passengers during transit to ensure safe transportation of all passengers.
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition) to ensure safe operating condition and compliance with mandatory guidelines.
  • Prepare computer‑generated and/or manual reports (e.g., field‑trip reports, incident reports, inspection records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information) to document activities and comply with established guidelines.
  • Report observations and/or incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior) to appropriate personnel for action.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff regarding transportation services.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements – Minimum Qualifications

Skills: Adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; operating district vehicles, fire extinguisher, two‑way radio, standard office equipment, computer applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge: Basic math (fractions, percentages, ratios); reading manuals; writing documents; analyzing situations; emergency evacuation techniques; area streets and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; health standards for medically fragile children; hazards; code and policy compliance; safe driving practices; two‑way radio communication; use of wheelchairs, tie‑downs, child safety seats, lifts.

Abilities: Schedule activities, meetings and events; gather and collate data; use job‑related equipment; problem‑solve to identify issues and create action plans; work with diverse individuals and groups; maintain confidentiality; maintain attention to detail; exercise sound judgment.

Responsibilities

Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; provide information and/or advise others; utilize resources from other work units as required; opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity. Requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. Work may involve temperature extremes and exposure to risk of injury or illness.
