Job summary

Ames Community School District is seeking Substitute Teachers for the 2026-27 school year. Positions are flexible and include preschool, elementary, and secondary grades.

These on-call roles require delivering instruction from lesson plans, maintaining safety, and supporting a positive learning environment across campuses in Ames.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Iowa Substitute License, Substitute Authorization, or Iowa Teaching License.
• Must be adaptable, collaborative, and an effective problem-solver.
• Must complete the required training within 30 days of being activated as a substitute in the substitute system.

Responsibilities

• Provides classroom instruction to students as outlined in lesson plans.
• Establishes rapport and remains focused on student needs to maximize learning.
• Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
• Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures in which assigned.
• Maintains a professional appearance as an example to students.
• Remains at school the entire school day, unless otherwise instructed or listed in an assigned position.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Maintains reasonable rules of conduct which encourages self-discipline and responsibility.
• Creates a sense of belonging and welcoming environment for all students and staff.
• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Compensation

$155 for a full day; $165 for a full day for retiree of Ames CSD.
