Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Occupational Therapy with at least three years of experience preferred. Master Degree preferred. Must maintain a current and valid State of TN Occupational Therapy License (Division of Health Related Boards) as well as the required continuing education to maintain license.

Nature of Work

Employees in this classification assist in a special education and/or general education class setting by providing occupational therapy based upon the specific needs of students receiving special education services. One must be capable of providing occupational therapy, monitoring progress based on goals established in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and within the school setting, implementing effective instruction, collaborating/interacting with students, parents, and co-workers, and possessing strong organizational and planning skills. Activities associated with this position include stimulating gross and fine motor skill development, working with students to reinforce basic learning objectives, and administering basic diagnostic tests.

Job Description

  • Administers occupational therapy procedures and modalities for the purpose of achieving program objectives for students who receive direct, consultative, or walk-in services.
  • Assesses students’ fine and gross motor skills and functional abilities (e.g. perceptual-motor, hand functions, motor coordination, sensory development, muscle strength, etc.) for the purpose of determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for occupational therapy treatment, appropriate assistive devices and/or curriculum access.
  • Collaborates with students, parents, teachers, and/or other personnel for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services, making recommendations and/or coordinating occupational therapy services with those of other disciplines.
  • Develop treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of remediating students’ motor skill deficits and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Identifies structural issues for the purpose of removing barriers for students with physical limitations and/or identifying appropriate technology and assistive equipment.
  • Instructs students and staff for the purpose of providing information on medical/behavioral attributes, use of assistive devices and/or implementing plans for remediation of functional limitations.
  • Interprets medical and academic reports for the purpose of providing information and/or ensuring that treatment/intervention plans are appropriate.
  • Maintains files and/or records for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
  • Completes online daily documentation regarding treatment provided, length of treatment, and response to treatment.
  • Contributes current information and goals/objectives for the development of a student’s IEP.
  • Maintains monthly progress monitoring and provides updates in conjunction with case managers at report card intervals.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. training, workshops, seminars, IEP team meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or getting information.
  • Provides services at multiple work sites for the purpose of providing direct therapy interventions and assistance as required.
  • Screens students for the purpose of determining the need for further individualized assessment.
  • Consults with early intervention providers and parents to share information regarding the progress of their children.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines for interacting with children attending public schools.
  • Provides training and assistance to those who attend to the feeding, toiletry, and personal needs of special needs children.
  • Ability to organize personal time and activities to meet multiple job demands and work assignments.
  • Performs related duties as required.
