Job summary

Gallup-Mckinley County Schools seeks an Athletic Coach - Assistant Cross Country for Navajo Pine High School for the 2026-2027 school year. This on-site role requires a fall-sport contract and eligibility to coach (Athletic Coaching License 7-12).

You will teach fundamental running skills, strategy, and conditioning, supervise a staff of assistants, and report to the athletic director. Evening and weekend commitments are expected; you will promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and student growth

Qualifications

• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
• Previous successful coaching experience in cross country or major sports.
• Knowledge of technical aspects of the sport and current coaching theories.
• Must model appropriate behavior for student athletes.

Responsibilities

• Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training.
• Ensure character development, self-discipline, self-confidence and pride of achievement.
• Upgrade knowledge through coaching clinics, observations and consultations.
• Work with students, provide practice support and coach evenings/weekends.

High School Diploma or Equivalency
AND
Must hold or have the ability to obtain an Athletic Coaching License (https://webnew.ped.state.nm.us/bureaus/licensure/how-to-apply/athletic-coach-7-12/ )
from the New Mexico Public Education Department as well as completing the Fundamentals of Coaching online exam offered through the New Mexico Activities Association. (www.nmact.org)
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
2. Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport. (Major sports)
3. The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport
and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to
the field.
4. The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through
his/her instructions and actions.
REPORTS TO: The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in
conjunction with the high school principals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: On-Site attendance is mandatory for this position.
SUPERVISES: In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of
high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the
athletic director and respective principal.
JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training
necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same
time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially
acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of
accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills
through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
Work with students interested in sports, provide necessary practice support and advice for a team to be successful against opposing teams in a sports season. Teach and enforce rules and regulations. Involves work on evenings and weekends.
