FLSA STATUS: Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The job of Speech and Language Pathologist is to identify students with communication disabilities; plan and implement appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success; and recommend treatment plans.

Duties & Responsibilities

(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Assesses students' communication skills (e.g. articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) for identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment.
  • Collaborates with parents, teachers, physicians, administrators, and other professionals to communicate information, resolve issues and provide services in compliance with guidelines.
  • Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g. testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, pre-referral staffing) to present evaluation results, develop treatment plans, and/or provide training.
  • Develops treatment plans, interventions and educational materials to minimize adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Instructs assigned support staff on communicative disorders, use of assistive devices, and implementation of prescribed treatment plans.
  • Instructs eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative devices) to minimize adverse educational impact in accordance with guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Interprets medical reports within scope of practice to ensure treatment plans are appropriate.
  • Maintains files and records (e.g. progress reports, logs, documentation) for reference and compliance.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for information exchange and professional development.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the work unit.
  • Performs site visits at multiple locations including home visits as required for therapy and support.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. activity logs, correspondence, treatment plans, Medicaid billings, reports) for documentation and communication.
  • Provides speech and language therapy to students to minimize the impact of communication disorders on student success.
  • Researches resources and methods to determine appropriate approaches for addressing students' needs.
  • Responds to inquiries from parents, teachers, staff, and students with information or referrals as appropriate.
  • Transports supplies and equipment to various sites to ensure availability of items as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience

Master’s degree (or higher) in Speech and Communicative Disorders

Licensing Requirements
  • Valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Arizona Department of Education Speech Language Certification
  • ASHA Certification
  • DHS Certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge: Anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms; principles and practices of speech and language therapy; relevant codes, policies, regulations and laws.

Skills: Conduct and interpret assessments; operate specialized equipment; use standard office software; maintain accurate records.

Ability: Adapt to changing priorities; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; work as part of a team; translate therapy data into educational activities.

Physical Requirements

Positions require stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, dexterity, talking, hearing, vision, and repetitive motions. Medium work; up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. May involve moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and noise.
