Job description

The King County Executive's Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget (PSB) is hiring interns to work with several different teams within the office as part of the 2025 PSB Summer Internship Program. Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the workings of government, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service. Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants. Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities. Opportunities to engage as an intern cohort, network and connect with leaders across the organization, and participate in outings to various County operations add to the intern experience at PSB.

ABOUT THE OFFICE:

The Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) is in the Executive department of King County government. It serves as a resource to the County's departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. Process/Project Management Intern

PSB is seeking a curious, goal-driven undergraduate student who enjoys working behind the scenes and helping others find the time and the tools to do their best work. Working directly with King County’s budget process manager, you will gain experience in managing a complex process/project across a team of twenty individuals. There will also be opportunities to attend budget decision-making meetings with county leadership. This is an excellent entry opportunity to learn more about a key process integral to any public, non-profit, or private organization: budgets.

With the guidance of a mentor, the intern will perform the following duties:

  • Learn about the King County budget process and assist in updating and documenting standard work related to it.
  • Assist in managing the budget process by developing relationships with multiple team members and connecting with them to produce weekly project updates.
  • Use visual management (dashboards) to monitor the budget process. Work with budget process manager to identify barriers and risks to process and co-create strategies to reduce or remove them.
  • Develop a customer satisfaction survey, analyze results, and produce a report.
  • Assist with other tasks as they arise and time/capacity allows.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Pursuing an associate, bachelor's, or certification from a higher education institution.
  • Interested in project management and/or process management.
  • Comfortable working with numbers and data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Curious, goal-driven, and enjoys problem-solving.
  • Excel familiarity a plus.
