Job description

The King County Executive's Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget (PSB) is hiring interns to work with several different teams within the office as part of the 2025 PSB Summer Internship Program. Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the workings of government, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service. Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants. Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities. Opportunities to engage as an intern cohort, network and connect with leaders across the organization, and participate in outings to various County operations add to the intern experience at PSB.

ABOUT THE OFFICE:

The Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) is in the Executive department of King County government. It serves as a resource to the County's departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. Performance and Strategy Intern (Undergraduate):

Candidates selected for this internship will work closely with members of King County’s Performance and Strategy Team in our efforts to achieve our vision statement: We transform the way government operates to help King County be a community where every person can thrive.

Our team takes on a variety of programs and projects throughout the year in support of our “Best-Run Government” priority area. Depending on capacity, timing, and interest our intern(s) will be assisting with several of these projects:

  • Develop resources and references for onboarding employees to performance management and “driving for results” approaches and goals.
  • Evaluate and make improvements to our performance monitoring portal on SharePoint.
  • Update our Performance and Strategy public-facing website to improve user experience.
  • Manage and support our transition from MS Excel to an improved MS Lists and Power BI based performance reporting and monitoring platform.
  • Provide technical support and develop guides and how-to videos for workgroups and teams using the new tools, including developing use cases as examples of success in performance management and creating the content for blog posts.
  • Transition our existing training materials from classroom-based, instructor-led to virtual environment and/or on-demand format.
  • Support the Equity Impact Review update, deployment, and user adoption.

Minimum Requirements:

  • This position is open to undergraduate students.
  • Comfort with Microsoft 365 Suite, preferably including SharePoint, Microsoft Lists, and Power BI.
  • Interest in performance management, operations management, and strategic planning.
  • Interest in project management.
  • Comfort with outreach and interviewing users for blog posts, guides, and videos.
