Job description

Job Description: 2025 PhD Graduate - Materials Science at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Join our team as a PhD materials researcher to contribute to the invention, processing, and characterization of groundbreaking materials. Your role will involve applying your expertise in engineering, laboratory testing, and data analysis to solve important national challenges. You will explore structure-property relationships in additively manufactured metals, investigate coatings for extreme environments, characterize pioneering polymers, and more. We support your research ideas and publication opportunities.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Perform experiments in the materials laboratory under the guidance of a project manager, aiding in the development of new materials through synthesis, characterization, and testing.
  2. Conduct detailed data analytics and communicate findings effectively.
  3. Design novel alloy compositions and structures, leveraging advanced manufacturing processes like additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy.
  4. Develop processes to advance modern metallic systems, including shape memory alloys and high-entropy alloys.
  5. Create streamlined methods for materials characterization in extreme environments.
  6. Engage with project teams and leadership, supporting computational materials science efforts and reporting progress.
  7. Design and execute independent R&D projects to enhance capabilities at APL.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting requiring physical activity and travel for testing, visits, conferences, and presentations.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Published research on process-structure-property relationships.
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis and machine learning methods.
