Job Description

Position: Special Education Teacher
Salary Schedule: Certified Teacher Schedule
Department: Special Services
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

This position is for a candidate interested in working with and providing instruction to students with disabilities in a Special Education or General Education setting. The candidate must understand a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited to, Learning Disability, Intellectual Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impairment, Hard of Hearing/Deaf and Visual Impairment. Knowledge and/or experience with Behavior Modification Strategies, I.D.E.A., and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support are required. Compliance, confidentiality, and communication are essential characteristics for this role.

Qualification Requirements
  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university
  • Special Education teaching certificate; Mild/Moderate and/or Severe/Profound Certificate
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small group instruction tailored to students' IEPs.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to ensure a conducive learning environment.
  • Evaluate students' academic and social growth; maintain records and prepare progress reports as per IEP and district requirements.
  • Communicate with parents through IEP conferences and other means regarding student progress.
  • Maintain professional competence through district-provided in-service and self-directed professional growth activities.
  • Supervise students during out-of-class activities.
  • Participate in faculty committees and student activities.
  • Complete all required paperwork and forms timely to meet federal compliance deadlines.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to provide appropriate accommodations for students on IEPs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in reading, comprehending instructions, and writing grammatically correct correspondence. Ability to solve practical problems, interpret instructions in various formats, and adapt to changing environments.

Physical and Work Environment

The role requires physical activities such as handling objects, reaching, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, and lifting up to 100 pounds. The work environment may involve exposure to airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and noise levels from somewhat loud to extremely loud. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May occasionally supervise staff or students as needed.
