St. Louis Park High School is seeking a dedicated and passionate Choral/Vocal Music Teacher. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses within the music department, specifically focusing on the following subjects:
  1. Concert Choir
  2. Park Singers
  3. Hip Hop History
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Music Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and comprehensive music instruction that fosters students' appreciation, understanding, and skills in music. They create a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports musical growth, creativity, and performance opportunities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develops and implements a music curriculum aligned with state and district standards.
  2. Teaches music theory, history, vocal and instrumental techniques, and appreciation.
  3. Adapts lessons to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  4. Integrates technology and multimedia resources into instruction when appropriate.
  5. Leads and directs school concerts, recitals, and performances.
  6. Encourages student participation in choir, band, orchestra, or other ensembles.
  7. Provides individual and group instruction to improve musical skills.
  8. Supports students in developing confidence, creativity, and teamwork through music.
  9. Maintains musical instruments, equipment, and instructional materials.
  10. Establishes and enforces classroom rules to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  11. Manages rehearsal schedules, performance logistics, and student expectations.
  12. Works with colleagues to integrate music into interdisciplinary learning.
  13. Communicates with parents/guardians about student progress and upcoming events.
  14. Coordinates with school staff and administration for performances and special programs.
  15. Participates in professional learning opportunities and stays current with best practices in music education.
  16. Ensures compliance with school policies, safety regulations, and copyright laws.
  17. Attends staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school events as required.
  18. Other duties as assigned.

  1. Music theory, history, composition, and performance techniques.
  2. Vocal and instrumental instruction methods for various skill levels.

  6. Proficiency in one or more musical instruments and vocal techniques.

  10. Organization and time management for rehearsals, performances, and lesson planning.
  11. Inspire and engage students in a creative and supportive environment.
  12. Adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
  13. Manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive learning atmosphere.
  14. Organize concerts, recitals, and musical events.
  15. Stay current with trends and best practices in music education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  1. Movement: Regularly required to stand, walk, and move around the classroom, music room, or performance spaces.
  2. Lifting & Carrying: May be required to lift and carry musical instruments, equipment, or classroom materials (typically up to 25 lbs).
  3. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to play musical instruments, conduct, use musical technology, and handle classroom materials effectively.
  4. Extended Standing: Frequently stands for extended periods during lessons, rehearsals, and performances.
  5. Hearing & Communication: Requires clear hearing to listen to and evaluate students' performances, and strong verbal communication to provide instructions and feedback.
  6. Fine & Gross Motor Skills: Uses fine motor skills for tasks such as writing, handling instruments, and typing for lesson planning or reports.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  1. Setting: Primarily works in a music classroom or performance space such as an auditorium or band/orchestra room.
  2. Schedule: Typically follows the school-year schedule with standard school hours, but may include evening or weekend performances, concerts, and rehearsals.
  3. Interaction: Works closely with students, staff, administrators, and parents to promote musical learning and performance.
  4. Noise & Distractions: Exposure to noise from student rehearsals, performances, and musical instruments. Requires the ability to manage noise levels effectively.
  5. Collaboration: Frequently collaborates with other teachers, especially for interdisciplinary projects or school-wide events.
  6. Physical Environment: May need to move between various locations within the school for different classes and events, including classrooms, hallways, and performance venues.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  1. Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  2. A Master's degree in Music Education or a specialized area may be preferred for some positions.
  3. State certification or licensure in Music Education is required to teach in public schools.
  4. Additional certifications in specialized areas (e.g., choral music, instrumental music) may be beneficial.
  5. Prior teaching experience in music, especially in a school or classroom setting, is often preferred.
  6. Experience directing school musical groups, such as choirs, bands, or orchestras, is highly desirable.
  7. Familiarity with curriculum development and integrating music across different grade levels is an asset.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Minnesota teaching license in Vocal Music.
