Purpose Statement

The Instructional Assistant/Classroom Assistant provides support to the instructional program by assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students in the regular classroom, and implementing plans for instruction. The role reports to the CE Summer Program Coordinator.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administer tests, homework, make‑up work, etc., to support teachers in the classroom.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Escort students to bathroom, office, classroom, etc., ensuring efficient and safe arrival.
  • Document instructional materials and files (both manual and electronic) to ensure availability and meet mandated requirements.
  • Model conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, job skills, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Monitor students’ daily schedule and behavior plan, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments (restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Perform general clerical functions (copying, filing, data entry, etc.) to support the instructional program.
  • Provide instruction to students under the supervision of the assigned teacher in a variety of individual and group activities (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, job skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, assist in adapting to mainstream classrooms and/or work places, and ensure student success in school.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Adhere to safety practices and operate standard office equipment, including relevant software applications.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic math, including fractions, percents, and/or ratios.
  • Read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, present information to others, and understand complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
  • Instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities; safety practices; conflict resolution; stages of child development/behavior.
  • Schedule activities; gather and collate data; use basic job‑related equipment.

  • Work with a wide diversity of individuals and data; utilize a variety of job‑related equipment.
  • Problem‑solve to identify issues and create action plans; moderate level problem‑solving with equipment.

Work Environment

The job requires significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical physical demands: 10% sitting, 60% walking, 30% standing. Exposure to minimal temperature variation and risk of injury or illness.
