Job Description
Primary Purpose: Assists the Bilingual ESL Director in collaborating with district staff, parents, and outside personnel to provide educational opportunities for Bilingual ESL students. Provides effective communication between the school, the District, the student’s family, and appropriate public agencies, translating oral and written communication between English and Spanish for various meetings, documents, and activities.
Qualifications
- AA/AS or a minimum of 60 college credit hours preferred.
- Valid Texas Educational Aide Certification preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills
- Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English and Spanish.
- Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in both languages.
- Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district personnel.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to use a personal computer and software to develop spreadsheets and databases, and word processing.
- Proficient keyboarding, file maintenance, multitasking skills.
- Ability to meet established deadlines.
- Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and able to multi‑task.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others.
Experience
A minimum of one (1) year of translation and interpretation experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Interprets for parent‑teacher conferences, student assessments, home visits, and other parent involvement activities.
- Interprets for IEP meetings as required.
- Translates home/school communications for limited English proficient students.
- Translates student foreign transcripts, IEPs, and other documents as necessary.
- Assists with identification and monitoring of limited English proficient students.
- Assists with collection of program data for reports to local, state, and federal agencies.
- Assists with instruction/remediation of limited English proficient students district‑wide.
- Assists families of newly arrived National Origin Minority students in the school registration process.
- Assists with collection of data and maintenance of records of National Origin Minority students.
- Assists EL students by tutoring, or working with them individually and in small groups under the supervision of a certified teacher or the ESL resource teacher.
- Participates in scheduled ESL staff meetings and in‑services as requested.
- Fosters positive relations between the home and school.
- Makes phone calls to parents.
- Translates both written and verbal communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
- Provides interpretations as required by phone conferences or in person.
- Translates district‑wide letters and documents.
- Proofreads other translations and provides feedback.
- Tests and evaluates students that are new to the district for LEP identification and placement.
- Serves as a liaison between school and community.
- Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
- Participates in department/staff meetings and special events as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Computer with appropriate software, printer, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, audiovisual equipment.
Mental Demands
Ability to communicate effectively (listening, verbally, and in writing in both English and Spanish), attend to detail, maintain emotional control under stress, and handle frequent interruptions.
Physical Demands / Environmental Factors
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing and pulling, and minor lifting.
- Prolonged use of computer.
- Move and carry small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
- May have exposure to biological hazards.
