PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide leadership for the school’s entire athletic basketball program through the ongoing development, implementation, and improvement of the sport coached.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the head coach with instructing students in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Assist in implementing athletic standards as outlined in the MSHSAA Handbook and attend all MSHSAA required sessions.
- Assist in the coordination of the program.
- Assist in the supervision of students at practices and contests.
- Help provide information for transportation, facilities, officials, and game management.
- Help organize and schedule practice sessions regularly to develop the student-athlete’s potential.
- Emphasize safety precautions and be aware of best training and injury management procedures.
- Conduct team and self ethically during practices and contests, exemplifying high standards of sportsmanship.
- Assist in the systematic return of all school equipment in accordance with the KCPS Athletic Department Handbook.
- Continue professional growth through clinics and professional publications.
- Must successfully complete the MSHSAA/NFHS Coaching Principles Course and Sports First Aid Courses.
- Fulfill 8 contact hours of professional development, including 4 hours at district level meetings, 3 hours at school level meetings, and 1 hour at outside meetings or clinics.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Student-athletes and assistant wrestling coaches.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a four-year college degree and be contracted by the KCPS Board of Education for the school year as a full or part-time teacher, or have 1-3 years of coaching experience.
- Knowledge of the sport’s philosophy and coaching techniques.
- Successfully complete the MSHSAA/NFHS Coaching Principles Course and Sports First Aid Courses.
- Strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and working knowledge of collegiate eligibility regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Employed as a teacher or administrator at the school where applying for the coaching position.
