Job description

Position: Bus Driver Trainee (Updated)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Actively seeking to become CDL certified school bus driver. Serve as a bus monitor until eligible to drive a school bus. Attend required bus driver training sessions as required by trainer or supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Must be at least18years of age
  • Valid Texas Driver's Licenseand ability to obtain Texas Commercial Driver's License, Class B, (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus Endorsements within 60 days
  • Maintain an acceptable MVR - Motor Vehicle Report, in accordance with the Texas school bus driving record eval
  • Must pass annual mental and physical exams required by Texas DPS
  • Must attend in-service training classes and safety meetings
  • Must meet all LPISD hiring criteria, including background screening that meets hiring eligibilty

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Attend all school bus driver training as required by trainer or supervisor
  • Complete Texas CDL written exams to obtain Commercial Driver's License Permit
  • Successfully complete behind-the-wheel instruction and subsequently pass Texas DPS skills and driving
  • Pre-trip bus & emergency equipment inspection prior to leaving lot for every bus run/trip, including a proper air brake inspection
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries and mechanical failures
  • Complete all required reports in a timely manner
  • Participate in head counts and roll calls as needed and complete required reports
  • Supervise students while they board the bus, are on the bus and as they leave the bus
  • Ensure students are crossing the street in accordance with district expectations
  • Communicate with teachers and parents as needed regarding student behavior while on the bus
  • Maintain/Report student discipline issues according to transportation policy (verbal warnings, phone calls, write-ups)
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school and report any hazardous conditions along the route
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that can cause an accident and inform supervisor of any items that cannot be corrected
  • Operate two-way radio equipment in accordance with departmental policy
  • Work irregular hours as needed
  • Attend and complete required training programs and maintain all necessary certifications and license
  • Perform any duties that may be assigned by the director or supervisor, up to and including extra runs, as needed

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors

  • Continued sitting, reaching, climbing up and down steps and repetitive hand and arm motions
  • Frequentexposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel
  • Ability to enter/exit from bus and supervise student evacuation from bus in a timely manner during emergency situations
  • Moderate lifting

Environment:

Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel

Mental Demands:

Maintain emotional control under stress, ability to communicate effectively (verbal)

The district contributes $400/monthly to the cost of "employee-only" health insurance which is $175/monthly greater than the state required amount of $225/monthly.
