Job summary

Gallup-Mckinley County Schools seeks an Educational Assistant (1st Grade) for Thoreau Elementary School for the 2026-2027 school year. The position supports the classroom teacher, assists students with lesson assignments, and helps with routine clerical duties.

On-site requirement; a High School Diploma or equivalency and a Level III Educational Assistant license from NMPED are required. Experience in teaching assistance is desirable, and knowledge of early childhood development is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Level III Educational Assistant license from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) required.
• One year of related teaching assistance experience desirable.
• On-site attendance is mandatory.
• Knowledge of early childhood development and classroom management.
• Awareness of cultural diversities including Native American traditions.

Responsibilities

• Assist the classroom teacher in delivering course objectives following curriculum guidelines.
• Assist in implementing lesson plans and grading assignments.
• Maintain files and attendance/grade records, ensuring confidentiality.
• Assist students individually or in groups with lesson work.
• Operate classroom equipment and office machines to prepare materials.
• Provide instructional support to students to reinforce concepts.
• Help maintain order and a conducive learning environment.
• Coordinate class field trips as needed.
• Support the teacher in fostering positive student behavior and safety.
