Job summary

Avondale School District is seeking a dedicated 1:1 paraeducator for Avondale High School to support a special education student in the least restrictive environment. You will collaborate with the assigned teacher and the school team to implement individualized plans and assist with daily living, health, and educational needs.

The role involves direct student support, behavior management, and coordination with staff.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or 60+ college credits preferred.
  • ETS Parapro Assessment required.
  • Ability to relate to children and adults positively.
  • Training or coursework in early childhood, education or child development.
  • Experience working with groups of children.
  • Skills to support the school district's curriculum.
  • Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all classes with the student.
  • Open/close packages, containers, doors, etc.
  • Assemble/disassemble instrument.
  • Take instrument out of case and back in case.
  • Monitor for gross/fine motor challenges.
  • Communicate observations/needs with the team.
  • Keep personal care logs.
  • Bill Medicaid if appropriate.
  • Additional hours for band/band practice may be available.
  • Assist disabled students in education, health and behavioral needs as needed.
  • May assist disabled students by dispensing medication after training.
  • Maintain communication with the special education teacher regarding students.
  • Maintain confidentiality of school information.
  • Assist teacher with classroom operations per instructions.
  • Assist and supervise students with computer use.
  • Attend meetings/functions as directed.
  • Participate in staff development.
  • Assist in developing/maintaining special education records.
  • Demonstrate understanding of students’ needs and interact appropriately with students, parents, and staff.
  • Follow instructions and reinforce program philosophy in classroom procedures.
  • Demonstrate initiative with individual children and program implementations.
  • Assist with classroom housekeeping and preparation of materials.
  • Maintain records, write lessons, prepare materials, correct work, procure resources.
  • Assist in development of instructional materials as appropriate.
  • Assist in regular education classes as assigned by a special education teacher.
  • Hears students in recitation/reading/curriculum tasks and guides them, not teaching.
  • Initiate actions without explicit direction from the teacher.
  • Supervise students in activities beyond basic classroom.
  • Be physically able to participate in physical activities in the program.
  • Maintain composure under stress.
  • Understand behavior as communication, not personal offense.
  • Follow individualized learning/behavior plans.
  • Tolerate eating/sensory issues.
  • Maintain flexibility in roles.
  • Assist with lunch and recess support.
  • Assist with administering assessments under supervision.
  • Participate in standardized testing training.
  • Participate in para educator professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned by teacher/principal.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Attend all classes with student
  • Opening/closing packages, containers, doors, etc.
  • Assembling/dissembling instrument

  • Monitor for additional gross/fine motor challenges
  • Communicate with team observations/needs
  • Keep personal care logs
  • Bill medicaid if appropriate
  • Additional hours for band/band practice may be available
  • Assist disabled students in their educational, personal, health, and behavioral needs such as self-care, daily living skills, physical mobility, toileting, etc., as needed.
  • May assist disabled students by dispensing medication after being trained
  • Maintain open and meaningful communication with the special education teacher regarding all disabled students assigned paraprofessional support.
  • Maintain confidentiality of school related information.
  • Assists teacher with routine classroom operation; follows through on teacher's instructions within time limits.
  • Assist and supervise students in the use of computers, as assigned.
  • Attend meetings/functions as specifically directed. Does not attend MET and/or IEPC meetings.
  • Participate in and utilize information gained in appropriate staff development.
  • Assist special education teachers in development and maintenance of special education records.
  • Demonstrates understanding of students' needs, and interacts appropriately with students, parents, and other employees.
  • Follows instructions of teaching staff and reinforces program philosophy and consistency in classroom procedures.
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity with individual children and their program implementations; follows through with prescribed behavioral management programs.
  • Assists with classroom housekeeping, such as distributing paper and supplies, preparing bulletin boards, setting up and putting away appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Keeps records, writes lessons on the board, prepares tapes or materials for classroom use, corrects students' work, maintains instructional materials and supplies, and procures necessary resource materials, as required.
  • Assists with the development of instructional materials as appropriate and directed.
  • Assists in regular education classes as assigned by a special education teacher.
  • Hears the student in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, and guiding and helping them but not teaching them.
  • Initiates actions which are required without specific direction from the teacher.
  • Supervises students involved in activities other than the Basic classroom.
  • Is physically able to participate in physical activities which are participate in physical activities which are part of the basic program and which may be unique to his/her specific classroom.
  • Maintains composure under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrates an innate ability to realize that behavior is communication and not to be taken personally.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow individualized styles of learning and/or behavior plans.
  • Ability to tolerate unique eating/sensory issues (gag reflex demonstration).
  • Maintain flexibility (switching roles/positions within the program).
  • Assist with lunch and recess support.
  • Assist with the administration of the NWEA or other assessments under the direction of a certified staff member.
  • Participate in standardized testing training to support facilitation of and accommodating standardized testing
  • Participate in para educator professional development as assigned
  • Additional duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in hot temperatures and extreme temperatures below ten degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery/uneven surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and others. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The employee is often exposed to fumes and airborne particles and frequently must work in outside weather. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
