Job Duties

The Department of Engineering seeks applications for an engineering laboratory technician.

The successful candidate will join a cohesive faculty group in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and will provide technical support in the following areas: management andmaintenance of Electrical and Electronics Engineering laboratories; and technical support to faculty in the use of physical hardware and equipment for instructional and research purposes.

The Norfolk State campus enrollment is approximately 6,000 students, and the campus has a rich tradition of undergraduate teaching and research. Norfolk State has an emergent focus on semiconductor electronics, artificial intelligence/machine learning, bioengineering, and engineered materials with applications in areas such as biomedicine,advanced signal processing, and space-based technologies. The Engineering Department faculty support bachelor of science degree programs in Optical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Master of Science degree in Electronics Engineering, and a doctoral degree program in Materials Science and Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proficiency in the installation and maintenance of electronics engineering laboratory tools and apparatus (e.g. power supplies, function generators, digital multimeters, and oscilloscopes), and 3D printing tools and other fabrication tools.
  • Working knowledge in the use of basic electronics components in circuit applications (e.g. resistors, diodes, transistors, sensors, gauges, IC chips, circuit breadboards, etc…).
  • Working knowledge of wireless and local area network protocols, ability to install software applications on Windows and Apple desktop computers and laptops.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, and an ability to work collaboratively. Ability to effectively manage student workers.

Additional Considerations

Experience and/or knowledge in the use and maintenance of 3D printing tools,vacuum/pump hardware, optoelectronic tools and equipment, or microelectronic fabrication or characterization tools. Experience in organizing and cataloging hardware in professional (academic or industry) settings.
