Job summary

DataSpecta is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design and build data warehouses and pipelines for banking and finance clients. You will work with dbt, Python, and multiple ETL/ELT tools in a hybrid work setup, collaborating with analysts and stakeholders to deliver robust data solutions.

You will optimize SQL performance, model data both logically and physically, and prototype rapidly with AI coding assistants to move ideas to production quickly.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building data warehouses and production pipelines.
• You have written dbt models, tests and macros yourself.
• You use Python for pipelines and automation, not just scripts.
• Experience with at least one ETL/orchestration tool in production.
• Advanced SQL on MS SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL with tuning.
• Strong data modeling skills (logical and physical).
• Comfortable with AI coding assistants to accelerate prototyping.

DataSpecta is a Data & AI consulting and engineering company. We help organizations turn data into measurable business value through advanced analytics, modern data platforms and enterprise AI solutions.

We design and deliver across both on-premise and cloud environments, working closely with enterprise customers from discovery through to production. Alongside customer projects we build our own solutions, such as CogniSpecta (enterprise knowledge and cognitive search) and CodeSpecta (AI-powered software engineering). DataSpecta is part of the Innovance group, which has been delivering technology for banks and financial institutions since 2017.

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer who has built things, not only maintained them. You will work on data warehouses and the pipelines that feed them, mostly for financial customers. This is a hybrid work model.

What you will work on

• Data warehouses and data marts for banking customers
• dbt models, tests and documentation — as the main transformation layer, not a side tool
• ETL and ELT pipelines: building new ones, and rebuilding old ones nobody wants to touch
• Legacy flows that were never documented, where the first job is working out what they actually do
• Quick prototypes to test an idea before committing to a full build

What you will do

• Design and build data warehouses and data marts
• Build ETL and ELT pipelines and keep them running, using ODI, SSIS, Airflow, Informatica or a similar tool
• Build and maintain the transformation layer in dbt — models, tests, macros, documentation and lineage
• Read existing ETL flows and reports, work out the data preparation logic inside them, and rebuild it properly
• Simplify pipelines that have grown complicated over the years
• Do logical and physical data modelling, and review other people's
• Find slow SQL and make it fast
• Build working prototypes quickly, using an AI coding assistant where it helps, so the team can see an idea before investing in it
• Work directly with analysts, BI developers and business stakeholders to get requirements right the first time

What we are looking for

• 5+ years building data warehouses and pipelines that run in production
• dbt — you have written models, tests and macros yourself, not only run someone else's project
• Python — you use it for pipelines and automation, not only for one-off scripts
• At least one ETL or orchestration tool in production — Airflow, Informatica, SSIS, ODI, Azure Data Factory or similar
• Advanced SQL on MS SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL, including performance tuning and query optimisation
• Logical and physical data modelling
• Comfortable with an AI coding assistant — Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or similar. You use it to move faster and to get a prototype working in hours rather than days
• Experience working in an Agile team
• Good English — you will work with international teams and customers

Nice to see as well

• Experience in banking or insurance, or in another data-heavy industry such as e-commerce or telecommunications
• Experience migrating from a classic ETL tool to dbt
• Cloud data platforms — Azure, AWS or GCP, or a modern warehouse such as Snowflake, Databricks or BigQuery
