Job summary

Avenga is seeking a Senior AI Engineer / Founding Engineer to build end-to-end AI systems in a fast-moving R&D environment, spanning geospatial data, multi-agent backends, and a 3D UI.

You will lead AI/ML system design, agent orchestration, and Python backend development, using LangChain, vector databases, and FastAPI to deliver robust, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Experience designing AI/ML systems in R&D environments and leading technical direction.
• Strong background in building multi-agent backends and orchestration patterns.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs (Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI or similar) and retrieval-augmented generation.

Responsibilities

• Build end-to-end AI systems spanning geospatial scraping/ingestion, multi-agent backends, and responsive 3D UI.
• Develop AI systems using LLMs, RAG, vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, function calling, and external tools.
• Build performant Python/FastAPI backends with asynchronous programming for long-running processes.
• Design structured and validated inputs/outputs for AI systems and APIs.
• Work independently in R&D/POC environments and adapt to changing priorities.
• Apply strong problem-solving and ownership to evolving AI/ML challenges.

At the core of the role

We are looking for a Senior AI Engineer / Founding Engineer to build end-to-end AI systems in a fast-moving R&D environment.

The role spans the full engineering lifecycle - from scraping and ingesting massive geological datasets, through orchestrating AI agents, to rendering 3D insights in the UI.

You will work on AI/ML system design, agentic workflows, backend development.
Core skills you’ll bring

• ML Leadership Experience - ability to review business problems, define AI/ML designs, and provide technical direction beyond agents and LLMs.

• Agentic Orchestration - strong experience with frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, or similar.

• Multi-Agent Systems - ability to design multi-agent systems, including supervisor/worker patterns, orchestration flows, and state management.

• Generative AI & LLMs - hands-on experience with LLMs such as Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI, or similar.

• RAG - strong understanding of RAG architectures, retrieval optimization, embeddings, semantic search, context handling, and prompt design.

• Function Calling & Tool Usage - experience with function calling and external tool usage.

• Vector Databases - experience with vector databases such as Vertex AI RAG Engine, Pinecone, FAISS, or similar.

• Python & API Development - strong Python skills and experience building APIs using FastAPI or similar.

• Async Programming - understanding of asynchronous programming and handling long-running processes.

• Data Modeling & Validation - experience with Pydantic or equivalent frameworks, including the ability to design structured inputs and outputs for AI systems and APIs.
