Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentorship to software development teams, driving engineering excellence and best practices.
- Own and lead end-to-end technical and architectural design of complex, scalable and highly available systems.
- Own and evolve the principles of an AI-driven development ecosystem, transforming existing projects and processes toward AI coding agents and AI-first ways of working; take responsibility for making brown-field (human coded) projects developable with AI coding agents.
- Facilitate technical decision-making and evaluate alternative design approaches, ensuring solutions meet requirements for performance, scalability, modularity, reliability, maintainability and reusability.
- Select the appropriate technology stack and development approaches based on business and technical requirements, balancing technical feasibility, complexity and long-term sustainability.
- Lead architecture and design reviews, provide constructive technical feedback, and ensure architectural consistency across teams and systems.
- Translate architectural decisions into clear technical contracts, interfaces, data models and integration patterns.
- Work closely with engineering, product and other cross-functional stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle to ensure technical alignment and successful delivery.
- Continuously evaluate technical feasibility, system performance and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities for improvement and modernization.
- Establish and promote high-quality software development practices including clean code, refactoring, design patterns, TDD, code reviews, continuous integration and automated testing.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies and architectural bottlenecks; proactively define mitigation strategies and communicate risks to relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure consistent progress against technical plans and support teams in resolving complex technical challenges.
- Mentor and coach developers at different levels, fostering knowledge sharing, technical growth and a strong engineering culture.
- Lead the integration of AI coding agents into the team's day-to-day development workflow, defining the boundaries and decision criteria for which work is done with agents and which is done by engineers.
- Apply and scale Spec-Driven Development: establish the flow that reduces requirements into executable specs, specs into plans and plans into tasks, and manage the spec as a first-class artifact alongside the code.
- Define the quality, security and accountability boundaries of AI-assisted development.
- Develop strategies for making legacy systems workable with agents, including retroactively building the knowledge layer, characterization tests and safe refactoring seams.
- Share and spread agentic ways of working across the team, moving from individual tool usage to a repeatable team-level practice.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with at least one agentic coding tool (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Copilot Agent Mode or similar) on a production codebase, with real delivery experience rather than demos or POCs.
- Familiarity with AI engineering harness concepts: designing the environment agents operate in, together with its tooling, integrations and security boundaries.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong hands-on engineering background.
- Proven experience designing and developing microservices and distributed systems.
- Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, including technologies such as MongoDB and relational databases.
- Experience with Elasticsearch and distributed data/search solutions.
- Hands-on experience with messaging and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with distributed caching technologies such as Hazelcast is a plus.
- Experience designing and developing e-commerce or high-traffic transactional applications is a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision‑making skills, with the ability to address complex technical challenges.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, architects, product teams and other stakeholders.
- Proven ability to mentor, coach and influence development teams without relying solely on formal authority.
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for technical outcomes and engineering quality.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with approaches centered on code regenerability such as regenerative/Phoenix architecture and pace layers.
- Experience working with Spec‑Driven Development or similar spec‑first approaches (Superpower, BMAD, etc.), having practiced spec, plan and task decomposition in real delivery.
- Experience designing validation loops for agents: making test, static analysis, type checking, contract test and CI signals feedable back into the agent, and treating "can the agent verify itself" as a design criterion.
- Strong expertise in Java and the Spring/Spring Boot ecosystem is a bonus.
