Responsibilities
Personify Health is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead an AI Feature team responsible for PercyIQ, our suite of AI-powered discovery and conversation experiences that help members search for and engage with health, benefits, and support content. This is a high-impact leadership role at the center of Personify Health's generative AI strategy for the member experience, combining hands-on engineering management with deep exposure to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), LLM orchestration, conversational AI, and the safety, quality, and compliance guardrails required to responsibly deploy AI in a regulated healthcare context. You will lead a cross-disciplinary team of backend, frontend, and QA/automation engineers building and operating the AI systems behind PercyIQ. You will partner closely with Product, UX, Legal, and clinical stakeholders to ship AI experiences that are accurate, safe, measurable, and trusted — while also owning the day-to-day rigor of sprint delivery, on-call operations, and production reliability for the underlying AI platform.
AI‑Powered Search & Discovery
- Own delivery of PercyIQ's AI/RAG-powered search and discovery experience across Web, iOS, and Android, including agent orchestration, knowledge base ingestion, and result ranking/personalization
- Lead the team through go-live readiness activities — capstone testing, pilot release monitoring, load testing, and production alerting/runbooks — for AI-driven features
- Direct the build-out of analytics infrastructure to make AI feature usage measurable and reportable to product and business stakeholders
- Guide implementation of AI guardrails and evaluators that keep AI responses clinically appropriate, on-brand, and grounded in trusted content, including crisis/emergency detection and routing
- Oversee PHI/PII protection work such as masking sensitive health identifiers before storage, in partnership with Legal, Security, and Compliance
- Drive translation and localization support so non-English-speaking members can use AI-powered features in their native language
Conversational AI & Chat Experiences
- Lead technical solution design and delivery for PercyIQ's conversational AI experiences, including the AI engine/orchestration layer and an AI quality and safety management framework
- Own integration strategy for benefits and clinical chat use cases and handoff flows between AI-powered chat and existing human support channels
- Partner with Product and UX on conversation design, evaluating and adopting new orchestration frameworks and agent architectures as the conversational AI stack matures
- Own the AI-powered member support chatbot experience, including intent recognition, generative AI/RAG-based responses, and escalation to live human agents when needed
- Ensure operational health of the automated-to-human handover layer, knowledge base sync, and mitigations for AI hallucination or mis-routing, using established runbooks for recurring incident patterns
- Guide the team through ongoing evaluation of the underlying support-platform architecture, balancing near-term stability with long-term platform direction
- Support related PercyIQ capabilities such as personalized re-engagement dialogues, AI-driven recommendations, and member insights, partnering with adjacent teams where ownership is shared
Team Leadership & Operations
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of backend, frontend, and QA/automation engineers; own hiring, performance reviews, and career development
- Run the team's agile delivery cadence — sprint planning, retrospectives, release captain rotation, regression testing, and automation maintenance
- Own production support and on-call readiness for PercyIQ's AI services, including incident response, alerting, and post-incident documentation
- Track and report on AI system health metrics — evaluator/guardrail performance, latency, AI service quota/throttling risk, and feature quality — to engineering and product leadership
- Collaborate with peer Engineering Managers, the Director of Software Engineering, and Product/UX leadership on roadmap planning, sequencing, and cross-team dependencies
Qualifications
- Required 5+ years of experience in software engineering, spanning backend and frontend systems
- Required 3+ years in an engineering management or tech lead role, managing and developing engineers
- Required Hands-on experience building or operating production systems that use LLMs/generative AI, such as RAG pipelines, prompt/guardrail design, or agent orchestration (e.g., AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, or similar)
- Required Experience with conversational AI or chatbot platforms and integrating them with human escalation systems (e.g., CRM/helpdesk tools)
- Required Comfort operating in a regulated, compliance-sensitive environment (healthcare, PHI/PII handling) and partnering with Legal and Security on AI risk, safety, and privacy
- Required Experience with event-driven data pipelines (e.g., Kafka, S3, Snowflake) supporting analytics and reporting use cases
- Required Strong track record of production operations: on-call ownership, incident response, observability/alerting tooling (e.g., New Relic, PagerDuty), and load/performance testing
- Required Experience partnering cross-functionally with Product Management, UX, and clinical/content stakeholders on user-facing feature delivery
- Preferred Experience with search/discovery systems (ranking, relevance, personalization) at consumer or member scale
- Preferred Familiarity with mobile platforms (iOS/Android) and coordinating feature parity across Web and native apps
- Preferred Experience with translation/localization pipelines for global or multilingual product experiences
- Preferred Exposure to healthcare, wellbeing, or benefits technology platforms
- Preferred Experience evaluating or migrating between vendor platforms for conversational AI or customer support tooling
Education
Required Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
