Job summary

Berge Bulk in Singapore seeks a seasoned Vessel Manager to lead shipboard performance, safety, and maintenance across assigned vessels. The role reports to the Fleet Team Manager and requires strong leadership to guide Top 2 officers and crews, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory frameworks.

The candidate will coordinate with Procurement, Marine HR, Commercial and Operations to manage budgets and vessel performance, with an emphasis on efficiency and safety in a challenging maritime

Qualifications

• Preferably holding a Class I (Chief Engineer or a Ship Captain equivalent) or a degree in mechanical/electrical engineering.
• Experience managing Geared Handy Size, Ultramax, Cape size and larger vessels (Alframax, VLOC or VLCC).
• English fluency to effectively communicate across teams and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Ensures vessels are operating in full compliance with Maritime safety rules and Berge Bulk’s SMS; promotes a strong safety culture on board all assigned vessels.
• Manages vetting, PSC and Class performance; ensures certifications and surveys are maintained; follows up on corrective/preventive actions.
• Reviews and approves the procurement of ship-spares and services with support from Procurement Team.
• Manages the Top 2 crew and crew matters with Marine HR Team; provides leadership and communicates expectations.
• Researches technical information on equipment breakdowns and proposes holistic solutions for long-term performance.
• Monitors ship performance (Fuel, Lub Oil, etc.) with the Top 2 on board.
• Works with Commercial and Operations to ensure compliance with charter-party terms and commercial concerns.
• Prepares budgets for yearly operation, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc services/ship-spares; tracks expenses against budget.

Purpose of the Job

Reporting to the Fleet Team Manager, this position serves as a business manager who is responsible for all shipboard performance with regards to safety, technical, operation (fuel) and maintenance. The role holder leads the Ship’s Master and Chief Engineer (i.e. Top2) of the assigned vessels.

Responsibilities

• Ensures vessels are operating in full compliance with Maritime safety rules and regulations and Berge Bulk’s Safety Management System (SMS) to promote a strong safety culture on board on all assigned vessels.
• Manages vetting, PSC and Class performance. Ensure compliance with all relevant international and local regulations and that all vessel certification and surveys for class, flag and international requirements are compiled and maintained. Ensures implementation, follow up and follow through on all corrective/preventive actions.
• Reviews and approves the procurement of all ship-spares and services to be provided to assigned vessels with support from Procurement Team.
• Manages the top 2 and crew matters with the support from the Marine HR Team. Responsible for communicating expectations to Top 2; manages their performance and provides good leadership and support to them.
• Research technical information related to equipment breakdowns and proposes holistic solutions that will improve the long-term performance in the assigned vessels.
• Monitors and analyses ship performance (Fuel, Lub Oil, etc) together with the Top2 on board.
• Works with Commercial and Operations team to ensure compliance with charter-party terms of employment and other commercial concerns.
• Prepares budgets for the yearly operation of assigned ships, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc services/ship-spares within required timelines.
• Monitors and keeps tracks of expenses of assigned vessels against the budget assigned.

Requirements

• Preferably holding a Class I (Chief Engineer or a Ship Captain equivalent) or a degree in mechanical/electrical engineering.
• Required shore-based experience managing vessels of Geared Handy Size, Ultramax, Cape size and larger (i.e. Alframax, VLOC or VLCC)
• Assistant Vessel Manager - 1-3 years’ relevant experience
• Vessel Manager - Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience
• Senior Vessel Manager - Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience
• Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering background with relevant sailing experience on bulk carriers.
• Fluency in English to effectively communicate across teams and stakeholders
• Strong communication skills demonstrated through leadership and coordination of vessel teams
