Job summary

Berge Bulk is seeking a highly experienced Vessel Manager to lead the safety, technical, operation (fuel) and maintenance efforts for assigned vessels. The role will oversee the Ship's Master and Chief Engineer (Top2) and coordinate with the Marine HR Team on crew matters.

Location is Singapore with a permanent, full-time, hybrid work arrangement. The candidate should have Class I certification or a mechanical/electrical engineering degree and extensive shore-based vessel management experience.

Qualifications

• Requires Class I Engineer/Ship Captain equivalent or degree in mechanical/electrical engineering.
• Shore-based experience managing large vessels (Geared Handy Size to VLCC).
• Strong English communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with maritime safety rules and Berge Bulk SMS on all vessels.
• Manage vetting, PSC and class performance; maintain certifications and surveys.
• Oversee procurement of ship-spares and services with Procurement Team support.
• Lead Top2 (Ship's Master and Chief Engineer) and manage crew matters with Marine HR support.
• Research equipment issues and propose long-term performance improvements.
• Monitor ship performance (fuel, lube oil) with Top2 on board.
• Coordinate with Commercial and Operations to meet charter terms and commercial needs.
• Prepare annual budgets for ships, surveys, repairs and spares.

Purpose of the Job

Reporting to the Fleet Team Manager, this position serves as a business manager who is responsible for all shipboard performance with regards to safety, technical, operation (fuel) and maintenance. The role holder leads the Ship's Master and Chief Engineer (i.e. Top2) of the assigned vessels.

Responsibilities

• Ensures vessels are operating in full compliance with Maritime safety rules and regulations and Berge Bulk's Safety Management System (SMS) to promote a strong safety culture on board on all assigned vessels.
• Manages vetting, PSC and Class performance. Ensure compliance with all relevant international and local regulations and that all vessel certification and surveys for class, flag and international requirements are compiled and maintained. Ensures implementation, follow up and follow through on all corrective/preventive actions.
• Reviews and approves the procurement of all ship-spares and services to be provided to assigned vessels with support from Procurement Team.
• Manages the top 2 and crew matters with the support from the Marine HR Team. Responsible for communicating expectations to Top 2; manages their performance and provides good leadership and support to them.
• Research technical information related to equipment breakdowns and proposes holistic solutions that will improve the long-term performance in the assigned vessels.
• Monitors and analyses ship performance (Fuel, Lub Oil, etc) together with the Top2 on board.
• Works with Commercial and Operations team to ensure compliance with charter-party terms of employment and other commercial concerns.
• Prepares budgets for the yearly operation of assigned ships, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc services/ship-spares within required timelines.
• Monitors and keeps tracks of expenses of assigned vessels against the budget assigned.

Requirements

• Preferably holding a Class I (Chief Engineer or a Ship Captain equivalent) or a degree in mechanical/electrical engineering.
• Required shore-based experience managing vessels of Geared Handy Size, Ultramax, Cape size and larger (i.e. Alframax, VLOC or VLCC)
• Assistant Vessel Manager - 1-3 years' relevant experience
• Vessel Manager - Minimum 3 years' relevant experience
• Senior Vessel Manager - Minimum 5 years' relevant experience
• Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering background with relevant sailing experience on bulk carriers.
• Fluency in English to effectively communicate across teams and stakeholders
• Strong communication skills demonstrated through leadership and coordination of vessel teams
